There is the letter of Real Estate and the spirit of Real Estate...

There were quite a few close encounters that I had in the past 17 years with the LAPD.  Some of which I choose not to even remember or talk about.  Some of which caused memory loss, punctured lung and some missing ribs, 8-12-1992, 110 fry and Hill St. Police Motorcycle (me) VS. Car and Freeway wall.  Car and Freeway wall were most victorious.  Most police officers can speak of such events in their career's.

But every industry is not without their members not understanding the difference between spirit and letter.

Enter a friend of mine at the department, he was a machine, he even wrote his citations as if they were typed on a typewriter.  His penmanship was remarkable and he was complete.  He could testify in court like no other.  He reviewed each and every stop that he taped prior to testifying.  He went out to the scene of the violation, on his own time, to make sure that nothing had changed from the day of the citation Ex: new building, vegetation, controls, lighting, markings or anything that might influence the court in a negative way.  Yes, I must say, he was the poster person for LETTER.  No one got a break.  We all make mistakes.  Some much more painful than others.  But this man never used the spirit side of police work.  Now, I cannot discount what he was doing, not his mission, values, code and the other things that might have happened in his personal life to create this hard drive.  Whatever it was, it was unable to be influenced by any other person in this world.

I gave breaks, I liked people to be honest, and not to start off by stating to me that they did not commit the violation that I pulled them over for.  Yes, I am human, but I operated under the understanding in my mind that if I was in the least doubtful of what a person did to break himself or herself against the law.  I did not stop them.  I waited until I knew for sure what was happening before taking action.  Some were written, and some were not.  I, to this day, consider myself a hugger.  I understood the mission of citations.  For everyone written, there are about 500-600 other drivers that see you.  For a moment, they might slow down and correct any actions that they have turned into bad habits and violations.

Can anyone tell me where is the Spirit in Real Estate between Agents?  I have seen the Letter, but for the past 9+years, the Spirit has been lacking.  Can anyone advise how we get it back?

You raise an excellent question.  In my opinion, I define the answer to this question, as the difference between a sales person and a consultant.  You see a consultant can be anyone.  It can be policeman, a relative, a reverend, a teacher, a Realtor, a broker, and so on. The key is that a consultant works out of selflessness as opposed to selfishness.

In your case, Connor, it's apparent that you understand the human element and you recognize that sometimes we all need a helping hand.  A salesman will follow the letter to the commission, as opposed to the Spirit to the (clients) need..

Wanna find the spirit in Real Estate?  Work from the heart, and make sure everyone on your team is clear about your expectations.  The rest will fall in place.  But of course, I can see by your posts you're already there..

Excellent Write up...
And if I haven't said this to you before, Thanks for your service in the LAPD, I'm sorry you took a fall for all of us, but glad you're doing well.

Regards,
Martin
