Integrity Without Compromise In·teg·ri·ty

IntegrityWhat does integrity mean to you?  What does it mean for you in your business?  Moreover, what does your integrity mean to your clients?

The definition of integrity is really quite simple--firm adherence to a code of especially moral valuesIntegrity is synonymous with words such as incorruptibility, soundness, completeness, and honesty.  As real estate professionals, our 'value' is only as good as our integrity.

Commitment to integrity is something that is predominantly 'ingrained' in us as children; however, as adults, we must establish a commitment to this practice both in life and in our business, especially if we have employees or partners with whom we work.  Should we NOT share the same commitment to integrity as a team or a firm, our own moral principles are in jeopardy of becoming tainted.

weigh your options carefullyAre you a person of integrity? Are you incorruptible, sound, complete and honest?  Do you do the right thing even if it does not mean 'money in your pocket?'  Do you do the right thing even if it means additional steps in an already, lengthy transaction?  (i.e. disclosure)

Possessing high integrity is perhaps the most difficult quality in life to 'achieve' but, once you have achieved it, integrity is THE most satisfying one.  Integrity is primarily a formal relation that one has to oneself--it is connected to a very deep subconscious decision to utilize constraint when it comes to acting upon something that is morally conflicting for us.  Basically, whether we know it or not, subconsciously we may be 'considering' whether we should or shouldn't act morally in a particular situation.  If we have strong convictions to 'do the right thing,' our internal conflicts will occur less often and with less conscious involvement in the decision.

weigh your moral codeIn our business, we have SO many opportunities that could lead to the compromise our integrity.  Just look at the state of the economy, predominantly caused by those who chose (subconsciously, then consciously) to compromise their integrity in exchange for a hefty paycheck.  As I read the NC REALTOR magazine this evening, I noticed that the issues that caused agents to permanently lose their license were those related to poor decisions, which directly related to their integrity.

Are you willing to give up your license for a few extra bucks?  This is our livelihood--we should cherish our businesses and remember just how hard we worked to get to this point--but, only after we consider our morals; our integrity and that we've worked to protect our integrity all of our lives.

Debe- Wonderfully written post that makes one think.  It is a choice we make everyday in what we do and say.  We only wish every agent and every client had the same level of integrity that most of us strive for.

Great post Debe and thanks for sharing. Either you have it or you don't and even a blind man would know. I think most have swapped integrity with compromise or political correctness.

I have the highest regard for your ethics after reading your blog, There are few I would rather work with. I find that my integrity left me hanging while another realtor got my buyer, but I would not sale site unseen and so, added paperwork, added trip out for video etc. then buyer bought through another realtor. oh well, I was the one who left it open so that the buyer could buy even a FSBO.

Debe, Thank you so much for your post and the succinct way you have described Integrity. I feel Integrity and Morality go hand in hand and neither one is subject to the winds of change. They are the "Constant" in a constantly changing world. I try to live everyday with The Golden Rule and The Ten Commandments at the helm. It is with great pleasure that I am learning of more folks on this path in our industry through posts such as yours. God Bless.

Extremely well written and a great topic.  I guess it means a lot to me that people trust me, so I have to maintain a super high level of integrity.  One bad apple makes all of us look bad, so everyone please remember to do the right thing!

I had one of those closings to day that would make you want to quit.  But I kept my mouth shut and said in my mind, "I'm better than this I will not loose my mind, I will act professional because I have integrity."

Debe......Very interesting and thoughtful post.

Integrity to me means putting other's interest ahead of your own even if it means losinga commission!  Integrity over money!!!  I wish I could cash in my integrity to pay my bills--I would be a Billionaire if I could!

Thanks for sharing.

Debe - I am advising my clients who don't have to sell not to put their homes on the market now.  As a result, I have had to put my own home on the market and sell it at a loss.  However, when the mortgage money loosens up and the market gets better, my clients will realize that I give advice that is in their best interests, not in my best interests, and hopefully, in the end, high integrity will also have a business payoff.

Debe - This is just so powerful!  Integrity is knowing the difference between what's right and what's wrong.  Choosing the wrong path can only compromise the core values and ethics of the laws we must abide by.  There is absolutely no justification to bending the rules and jeopardizing our profession no matter how tempting the opportunity might be.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

Hi Bill!  You are 100% correct!  That's what it's all about, isn't it?!  I just don't understand what is so difficult for some to do accomplish this!  Life is MUCH better when you live it by doing the right thing!

Laura:  That is so true--when no one is watching is the true test, right!?  Thanks so much!

Kim:  Thank you so much!  For some, the choice is obvious, others need to take a closer look at what's important in their lives.  I do wish every agent worked with the same level of integrity!

Charles:  Thank you!  That's so true--and I do agree that there is such a poos for political correctness that it does interfere with our integrity--even in our business.

Brandy:  Well, thank you!  I've had that happen as well--funny thing with one of them--she took them and a couple of years later, they phoned me to list their home for them and they told me that they always felt bad about what happened!  What goes around... ;-)

Jill:  You're so right!  Funny that you should say that--I had a discussion with someone the other day that does not believe the same way that I do (different religion) and I asked him which of the 10 commandments that he just could not follow on a daily basis.  He agreed with me that even if you don't believe, those are bad guidelines in which to live your life!  The Golden Rule is also non-deonominational and easy to follow!

Isaac:  Well, thank you so much!

Jason:  Thanks so much!  I do think that we have to go overboard in order to overcome that one-bad-apple syndrome sometimes.

DeAndrea:  OH, I've had those moments and some just cannot be changed!

Aida:  Thanks!  To me, my integrity is priceless--there is no value attached and no amount of money can make me change that--okay well, cashing it in for billions to pay the bills...let me get back to you on that!!!  HA!

Darla:  Thank you so much!  I really appreciate your comment!

BethAnn:  Thanks my dear!!

Gail:  That really stinks for you but, you are setting the example and you ARE advising your clients with your heart as well!  Believe me, integrity WILL payoff in business--you just wait and see!

Robbie:  Well, thanks!  I appreciate your comment!

Donna:  Like you, this week has gotten away and I'm late getting back to you but, thanks so much!  There is simply no reason to risk losing those core values, is there?  It amazes me that some don't even think about it!

Roland:  Well, thank you my friend!  I really appreciate it!

Ced:  Thanks so much!  Cherish it with every decision you make, every business move you make, and with every action in life and it will NOT let you down!

Amber:  Absolutely!  I think we'll see the level of integrity rise in our business as we see those who do not share our values fall like flies from our field!

Trey:  Thanks!  That is sort of what got us here today, isn't it?!
