How do you inspire your children to learn more not only about their own culture, but the customs, languages and lifestyles of others?

With the Holidays coming around, we all know that there are different ways to celebrate them, but do our kids know? Have any of you ever told your kids that we may celebrate it this way but your friend may not?

I am a christian, my husbands family is Hindu and celebrate lots of Hindu holidays that I make it a point of telling my kids that even though I may not be a part of it, they can and should since it is a part of who they are!

I try not to shelter them not only from that but to other religous  holidays. Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are two that I also try to tell them about, even mine of 3 Kings Day.

I believe that its VERY important that they are made aware of all the cultures that are out there. Maybe its because my husband and I come from 2 very different cultures.

My daughter, I think is more aware than I think she knows. And like me she is not afraid to ask about something she is curious about. So I like be be prepared for the unknown questions.

Global WondersHow do you share with your children? Have they ever asked? Global Wonders has a new DVD that may help you with this, if you feel uncomfortable with some of there questions.

Good Luck and I hope that you enjoy the coming Holiday season!

I like to think that are religions are tied into each other, and they are just expressed differently in different parts of the world and in different households.  And that is how I intend to explain things when my son is old enough!

Jeannette,

We live in Central Florida, so around the Holidays we take the children to EPCOT...each country has their "version" of Christmas. And each country has their version of "Santa Claus" this person or at time persons (in Mexico there are the 3 kings) come out onto a stage and explain to the children what THEIR traditions are...and how THEIR culture celebrates...be it religion, traditions, and even food...it's a wonderful experience...fun and educational...

That is a wonderful way to show the different cultures for the holidays. I may have to do that one day!

My girls are older now, but we always talked about everything. the news has been great for starting a conversation. I like to try and see other view points, and point these out to them. There are reasons people see things differently, and that does not mean the other guy is wrong, just looking at it from a different side.-Dinah Lee

Thank you for sharing this post, Jeannette. It sounds like your children, like mine, have a unique opportunity growing up experiencing your and your husband's different traditions, customs and holidays. My husband and I are from different backgrounds and, like you, expose our kids to not only our family holidays and traditions, but also to those of their friends and classmates. I think this has helped instill a greater understanding of different cultures in my girls and hope that it has in your children, too.
