I have written several posts about better blogging tips and optimizations here on Active Rain. Some of them were very well-received by the community and many of them were FEATURED posts. I have attached some of them I feel would be a good read, especially for those who are fairly new here in the 'Rain.

Warning: This is a LONG post and I might lose you. But please bare with me. Bookmark this page and come back to it. It will take you step-by-step on making your blogs look better, hence increase your subscribership/readership.

1. Don't lose your audience.

We link to different posts and different parts of the Internet here and there. One thing I noticed is that some of these links are not opened in a NEW window. When you attach a link, your visitor clicks on it. It could take your visitor to that page either to open in a new window or same window. If you made the link in the latter, you could lose your audience into far, far away land. Remember that there are still some internet-not-savvy people who do not know about the Back button.

Highlight the text and click on the Link button.

The default should say, Open in New Window.

2. Take advantage of the Blog Customizer.

I am all about Branding and Individuality. I appreciate that Active Rain lets us customize so many aspects of our platform. I enjoy seeing the variety of blog customization here on Active Rain. Unfortunately, Barbara Duncan does not feel the same way as she expressed her view on her blog, A Few Favorites in the 'Rain and Why. Elizabeth, Lenn, Patricia, Steve, Charles... I am absolutely okay when a blogger chooses not to customize. I just like to see variety and more importantly, I enjoy seeing how others like to express their creativity.

Now, if only the Active Rain Outside Blog is as robust and as customizable as the main platform, I'd die and go to heaven. (I write a variety of blog topics and I use my Outside Blog as a pure Real Estate blog).

3. I love COLORS and lots of it.

I have been asked How I add colors to my blog. The fastest way for me (Note that I'm not highly internet/ HTML savvy like some of you) is to use Frontpage. It is pretty much like using Microsoft Word except that it has a back-end HTML code under the CODE section. The most updated Frontpage you could purchase is 2003 and it costs about $200. Web Expressions is the "new" Frontpage 2007 version. But I suppose Frontpage 2002 version costs about $90 on Amazon will do the job.

I understand that you may not want to spend any money at all, so you might need to understand some HTML.

Simple Example:

I Love Active Rain.

HTML Tag: Active Rain (or your words here)

To select the color and if you do not know the hexadecimal codes for the color you want, find it here on ColorSchemer Online. You could convert both ways, from RGB to Hex and vice versa.

You need to save your work and move to the HTML tab to add this.

4. I Love Buttons.

You could tell from my blog customization that I love Buttons. If you wanted a simple button, you could create one on Cooltext.com. You can create a button in a minute and it is a very user-friendly site.

For my more customized buttons, I first go to Microsoft's free Clipart and Pictures site here. Use keyword, Button and several hundreds to select from. Download the one you like.

Again, I am not very technologically savvy and there might be a smarter way of doing this. And if there is, please let me know and educate me. Otherwise, here is how I do it.

Insert clip art/ button into Microsoft Word. Add text on button.

Create a screen shot of your button with the text.
(Hint: Hit "ALT" and "Print Screen" at the same time)

Insert into your favorite Paint software. (I use Photoshop CS2).

If you use Photoshop, you will create a New Layer under File.

Paste the new button onto the layer.

Clean and crop your button. Then save your button as a .jpg or .gif file.

On your Active Rain blog post, insert the button file.

Select the APPEARANCE tab and change the properties you want.

Right alignment, left alignment, etc. and also the dimensions of the button.

Select the Inserted Button by clicking on the image. Then insert the URL with the Link Button.

5. Insert Pictures.

This was Jeff Turner's blog that taught me how to flow text around the image. Rather than re-inventing the wheel, I will just point you to his blog. Read Jeff's post about AR Tutorial about Flowing Text.

Loreena - When I joined Active Rain, I read a blog about using free software from NVU.com

I compare it to a word processing program.  I type my blog, then insert my images, resize them if necessary, control the spacing around the image so that the text doesn't bump up against the image, and I can also control all colors, size, of text and font type....everything I need to do I can do in this one program and see how it looks BEFORE I post it.  Why pay $200 for Frontpage....this is free!

I wrote a blog about how to use the software so that others don't have to take a lot of time to figure it out:
http://activerain.com/blogsview/588374/BLOGS-How-To-Make-Them-Look-Good-like-so-many-do-here-on-the-Rain

If anyone downloads and has a problem understanding my instructions, feel free to write or call me, I'll be glad to help!

Loreena you are awesome! Thanks for taking the time to put together this post to educate everyone. I know the screen captures, cropping, writing, etc takes time. You are a great asset to the AR community! One of the most balanced blogs I have ever read, and I look forward to your posts.

Greg - I had FP from a long time ago. I also know how to use Microsoft Word for this - which I will write up in the future. I know there are some stuff out there but I just didn't have the time to research. I'm very glad you pointed it out.

Karen - I'm sorry that it was too long. Like I had mentioned, I could have made this into 5 posts but I wasn't think when I wrote it late last night. I will be more thoughtful about this in the future.

Loreena,

Great post.  I love the tip for the free buttons.  Thanks.  Also I want to ditto what Gregory mentioned about Nvu.com.  Its a free download and very easy to use.  Type in it lust like word but you can change colors, fonts, add links, etc and then generate html code.  Very easy to use.

Congrats on the feature - well deseved!

An easier way to change the fonts and add color to a blog post is to use a free product such as www.nvu.com.  You cut and paste your blog post or type right in the NVU editor.  It is very close to using Word.  Once you have changed the font colors and size then click the tab called VIEW and select HTML source.  Cut and paste and bring it over to Active Rain in the HTML mode.  Done!

Hi Loreena,

Great advice and cooltext is great for anyone who isn't familiar with photoshop or doesn't have the time.

In regards to your method of creating the button. Why go through microsoft word? There's a text tool in photoshop. You simply just needed to create a second layer in a new document with a transparent background, and on that second layer (being on top of the first) use your text tool to write the text over the blog button. Then simply save it "for the web" as a gif and then you have the button you desire. Now if the button comes with a white background from cooltext then first import it into photoshop, (just drag file right over the icon - this works for pc and mac), and then use the magic wand tool with tolerance set at around 60 to highlight the white area surrounding the button and then click delete.

We'll probably end up writing some tutorials on this in the weeks to come but i hope that information helps. There's a million different ways to go about creating buttons, most of which actually should be created in illustrator first (for copyright reasons) so it's your own. But that's the fastest way i can imagine creating such a button if not from scratch. I'll make sure to put this on my to do list and reference this post as to link interested parties back to your blog where they can grasp the idea of the article, to keep your audience interested with color and design.

Great article and i look forward in assisting your readers by making some blog buttons for others to use coupled with that tutorial i mentioned.

Loreena - I think these are some terrific tips.  I have noticed that the "Open Link in New Window" thing doesn't always work correctly.  Sometimes, I see links on my own posts that are set that way, but they still open in the same window.  Also, I LOVED the Customizer, until I visited my in-laws in Houston (dialup) and it took way too long to load my posts, so I scrapped it altogether.  I know that my friends here may be willing to wait, but consumers aren't as patient.  I may give it another go and test it on a slow computer again just to see.

Loreena -- Fantastic Post!  First and foremost, I love the AR blog customizer and your blog is a GREAT example of how a blog an be personalized, tasteful and quick to load.  I know that another AR member wrote a post about the "cons" of customizing, but I think she is referring to those blogs that add photo wallpaper and it slows down the page load time.

I think you recommended CoolText in another post and I am hooked!  I haven't tried ColorSchemer, but I plan to today!

BTW -- did you create your masthead or did you hire someone?

If you enjoy what you are reading, remember to subscribe to my blog. It is my focus to provide relevant greater Frisco Texas real estate market information on real world level. No media hype. No fluff. Just a real voice based on an active Frisco realtor(R).
