Search Engine Marketing

With so much out there about Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) I thought I'd revisit this subject.

Search engine marketing is literally marketing your website on the search engines. This should be done alongside a comprehensive approach to SEO. Successful search engine marketing starts with the way your site itself is built. If your site does not have an organic SEO backbone, then your search engine advertising will really be the only way to get the word of your site out there. There is quite a lot of engineering that must take place in order for your internet marketing strategies pay off in the long as well as the short run.

Search engine marketing can refer to two very different things depending on who you are talking to. It can refer to Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising and sponsored advertising, or it can refer to actual SEO. Since I've dealt with the site design the compliments SEO, let's take a closer look at PPC and sponsored pages. Search Engine Marketing 1

So, how do you go about making your search engine marketing pay off? We take a comprehensive search engine markting approach and concentrate on your business, on your market. In order to maximize the effectiveness of SEM your team should be asking you questions like:

  • Who are you looking to connect with?
  • How are they finding you today?
  • What other internet advertising have you done? (In order to measure your current success)
  • Are you looking to expand your product or service line anytime soon?
  • Have you done any keyword optimization?

The answers to questions like these will make your SEM strategy pay dividends. This will enable your search engine marketing team to make the most of your search engine marketing efforts.

Search Engine Marketing 2 Now in all this talk of SEM let's not forget that web design has an integral part to play here. Without a nice website that compels the online visitor to explore further, and return (and tell their friends) then all the search engine marketing efforts you employ may not help. Your site must give the user a great experience in order for them to become a client.

I hope this helps you to understand search engine marketing a little better.

Good post, Tim.  SEO is such an ongoing task that one needs to work on it daily, find what works and keep doing it.  As far as PPC - I'm totally against that and don't believe it gets you legit leads.

Thanks Kris, really like anything else, success depends on implementation. Search engine marketing especially requires someone that knows what they're doing in order to get real results. There's no doubt about it though, SEO is an effort, you have to be consistent and committed.

Tim, great post.  I still have along way to go in getting our backbone as it pertains to SEO straight, but I continue to plug away.
