A FULL 11 DAYS WITHOUT INTERNET - DID I MISS IT? NOPE!

By

Sounds crazy?  Maybe, maybe not.  I went on vacation for 12 days and just got back yesterday afternoon.  I brought my laptop with me but never opened it.  I brought it with me just in case.  The last time I brought my computer to my vacation home in South Carolina in July, I could not get a wireless connection.  We do not have a hook up yet at my house down there.  We do not have a TV either and no land line phone.  I just had my cellphone.  I forwarded all my calls to my cell phone.

It was a total bliss being out of the rat race.  We spent days decorating the house, putting in a new garden, sightseeing, going out to lunch, reading and walking by the lake with our dog.  I read Da Vinci Code in 2 days.  My husband read three books.  We watched the sunset from the window of the dining room facing the lake while having dinner.  It was nice and peaceful.  The last two days, we walked the dog at 5 PM and the reflection of the town houses on the lake was fabulous.  The sky with the pink and blue hues coming from the setting sun was a lovely backdrop for the picture perfect reflection of the townhouses.

We listened to music and bits of news from my BOSE radio.  We heard about the horrid news of Wall Street and the election results.  We did an absentee ballot before we left.

I came home and I was back on my computer till 1 AM reading blogs.  Back down in Charleston, we went to bed at 9 PM, got up at 6 AM, fully rested.  I think I might go to the office tomorrow although I saw a colleague yesterday at the supermarket here and asked her if I missed anything and she said NOTHING.  Everything was quiet.  This is the perfect time to go on vacation.  I'm glad I did and sad to be back.

I love Charleston; it is such a fun and beautiful area.  If I were there I could go a few days without internet but I don't know about close to two weeks with no world wide web!  Myrtle Beach is not as exciting.

That is great, Sounds like you had a wonderful vacation.

This business can become overwhelming with the amount of contact customers and colleages demand from us. It is nice when you can center yourself and get back to the basics.

Heather - My husband asked me today how I managed to get by without a computer for almost two weeks.  He said he'll pull the plug so I get off it since I'm at it almost all day today.  I'm addicted to it when I'm in New York.

Jen - When I went on the New York District Rose Convention in September for the 3-day weekend, I checked my emails once.  This time was different.  I was so busy with other things, I did not even open my briefcase.  I figured the market is so bad, I won't miss a thing.  When we go on vacation, an associate usually handles our business so I don't worry.

Konnie -  Try it.  You come back so much refreshed.

Lou - Thanks.  Sometimes it's great to get away just to refuel.  It's good for your health.

Jenn - Charleston is such a lovely place with plenty to see and things to do, I don't miss the internet.  The only time I was in Myrtle Beach was in May.  We tried Route 17 and there was so much traffic at Myrtle Beach, we are not going to do it again.  We are better off taking 95, then 26.

Aaron - Just remember there was no internet years ago and we managed.  Thanks.

Luis - We need that break to keep our sanity.  The clients are so demanding these days, you have to go away sometimes.  It's good for the mind.

Congratulations you are a professional.  Everyone should know how to let go. I am thinkig of giving up my cell phone next year. I don't know that I can but maybe. When people get me on my cell, what they need is at the office anyway.

Joyce,

Thank you.  It was total heaven being out of the rat race.  Since we have no land line phone, my cell phone is my only communication tool in case of emergency at the house.  It was very relaxing 11 days.  My husband and I talked leisurely at breakfast looking out to the lake.  Even my dog enjoyed the vacation.

I went to Mexico with my family on a cruise and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to relax but I found wireless in the media room and started creaking e-mail and it was done.....  I wish now that I had refrained nothing would have exploded

Sandy,

We are addicted to check out our emails at every turn.  I almost did at the hotel on the way down but decided not to.  The world did not come to an end.

Lara . Thank you.  We are on the last unit on the right facing the lake so we have a full length view of the lake from the Dining Room, the Master Bedroom and the Guest Bedroom on the third floor.  It is a perfect place to unwind.

Lisa,

I had all the intention of getting connected with COMCAST but I figured why spend that kind of money every month when we only go down few times a year.  I was addicted to my computer before I went on vacation and so I made up my mind to catch up on my reading instead and that's what I did.  It's quite refreshing.

Indeed, you are crazy! -- LOL

I think there are still a few people who should take a vacation from their political rantings and ravings. They just might find out that the world does, indeed, not revolve around their candidates and causes and that life will go on.

Russel,

I needed that break to recharge.  I was too involved on too many projects so when I go on vacation, I try to relax and honestly I did not miss much.  It was so pleasant and the weather was fabulous.  Not the twenties and thirties we are having now in New York.
