My First Piano Lesson
Yesterday was finally the day I have been dreaming about for over 40 years....taking my very first piano lesson. If you missed my original post Don't Ever Let Go Of Your Dreams - Wishes Do Come True! you'll understand why this was such a momentus day for me.
My lesson was at 6:30 pm at my music teacher's home and I was so excited and nervous throughout the whole day as I anxioulsy awaited for the time to arrive. I had no idea of what to expect from this first lesson and had butterflies in my stomach as I pulled up in front of her home and walked up the stairs to ring the doorbell.
I was greeted immediately by my teacher Anne and the cutest two little toy poodles imagineable which helped to instantly set me at ease and feel a bit more relaxed. As we walked into the kitchen to enjoy a cup of tea together before starting our lesson, Anne filled up a large bowl with warm water to soak my hands in to loosen up my cold fingers and help to make them more nimble to play those little ivory keys.
Anne presented me with two wonderful books ..Adult All-In One Course and Hanon The Virtuoso Pianist to help introduce me to the basics of theory and technique to playing the piano. After my initial hand warming session in the water and performing some very simple finger and hand isometric exercises, next stop was the PIANO!
Anne was so patient and understanding in helping me to learn the finger numbers, basics of the keyboard, the musical alphabet, the right hand C position on the keyboard, how to sit at the piano and the importance of playing with curved fingers. We then went through a number of warm up excerises saying the name of each note aloud as I played until I could play them smoothly and evenly.
By the end of our 45 minute lesson, it was a bit overwhelming trying to comprehend it all but I was ecstatic over how much we were able to cover in such a short time and that I was able to play the first two bars of Ode To Joy by the time we were done!
I left with my new music books and will be spending at least 30 minutes each day practicing the excerises that need to be done before my second lesson next week. The only downside is that right now I don't have a piano but was able to borrow a full length digital keyboard from a friend of mine to practice on. It's going to make the learning process a little more difficult because the layout of the keyboard is a bit different from the piano but I'm determined to make it work for now.
Christmas list for this year?
