I started hearing this term floating around the office a couple of weeks ago. I had never heard of it before. Before I heard this term, I had already built my profile on facebook, linkedin, etc., but never realized there was an actual term for this form of social networking. Apparently, that is all there really is to it. When I first heard the term I thought there must be some new type of technology that I was, once again, not aware of. Come to find out I already knew what it was. I just didn't know there was a specific name for it. Is there some reason why we need a formal or different name for this? Can't we just call it online social networking? I'm all for the networking, I just think that every time we have to come up a new name for a fairly straightforward concept, we make it more confusing. Oh well - guess it's too late now - Web 2.0 it is.
The Wikipedia entry for Web 2.0 is actually a decent read to get your head around the concept. It is social networking, but its much more than that. It gets a bit techy and geeky at times, but I think after you read it you will be pretty excited about the concepts being laid out.
Web 2.0 is more than just social networking. It encompasses all of social media. It was a term first coined by O'Reilly Media during a conference they held back in 2004. It refers to a paradigm shift that occured in the use of the Internet, what some have referred to as the 'Second Generation' of the World Wide Web where the focus is placed on the ability for users to generate, collaborate/share, publish/distribute information online. Web 2.0 basically refers to the transition from static HTML Web pages to a more dynamic/interactive environment. Web 2.0 also includes open communication with an emphasis on Web-based communities of users, and more open sharing of information.
Good information @ wikiepeda! Thanks for the question Linda to lead to the answers!
Linda - Rich Jacobson has a very clear understanding of Web 2.0, and has hit the nail on the head! I too didn't quite know what Web 2.0 was, even after reading an article about it. I also wrote a post recently asking just about the same question as you. Now I've got it!
I wasn't aware of exactly what it was either, but I knew that it had something to do with connecting websites together and sharing information.
Linda, thanks for the clarification. I really wasn't sure what it was either.
