social media marketing

Social Media Marketing is going to be a term that you start to hear about more often now than ever before.  You have already heard of Web 2.0, which describes the trends being used within the World Wide Web of technology and web design that adds creativity, secures shared information, collaborates information, and induces the functionality of the web.

So, what is Social Media Marketing? It is primarily internet-based but also ties in with non-internet based methods such as word of mouth advertising. Social media marketing is all about collaboration between people. It's about participating with everyone and sharing information. Branding yourself through social media channels by engaging and interacting with existing consumers or potential consumers. You can build links within the activities in order to receive attention, which would get you large amounts of traffic to your site(s).

What Social Media Marketing is not :

Most individuals confuse it with advertising on a social networking site. It is also not about spamming, copying certain links and spamming it in discussion groups and forums.

Why do I bring any of this up? Active Rain is certainly the best place that I have found to share information with each other. And in many cases, it gives me a good method of getting in front of the consumer without leaving my home office.  But in the last 6 months or so, I haven't been participating as much as I have wanted. In some cases I was busy, in other cases, just burnt out from blogging or networking here on AR. But thank god, well, in this case, the AR gurus....for featuring certain posts. Even though Jeff Dowler is on my list of blogs that I subscribe to, I even miss those at times. But Jeff wrote this post the other day that got featured.

Social Media Marketing -- The Next One Is Starting!

Okay, so he didn't write it, he reblogged it. But what was great about it was that it opened my eyes to how important social media marketing will be. And it was about Pat Kitano & Kevin Boer who started a 12 session webinar series about the hows and whys of social media marketing. They not only have added a few extra 1st sessions for those that missed this, but have given a 50% discount to AR members.  For information on this, please click : Social Media Marketing webinar

So, how is social media marketing media different than e-mail marketing or mail marketing?

E-mail marketing - mail marketing - other forms of marketing

You can e-mail people in the form of drip campaigns. You can also e-mail or mail newsletters to previous or potential clients. How many of you even look at or read newsletters or through junk mail away?

Another form of marketing are pop ups or banner ads. But how many click onto these? And don't these cost you money to put on other sites?

Social Media Marketing

You promote yourself in multiple online social media venues. People find you by following you on these social networks.  Okay, many of us know that we can be searched online through key words that are included in our blogs. Do you know that Google searches Tweeter and other social networks, just like it does with Active Rain?

In speaking with Pat Kitano, he gave us an example. He used many different social networks and sent out  about 136 links to his blogs. He received an additional 5,000 hits just because of that. Talk about increasing your readership.

Summary :

Do you know that social media is only 5% of how we market ourselves or interact with prospects. This will double very quickly. In the webinars held by Pat and Kevin, they will not only give you a crash course on what media outlets are available, but :

  • they will teach you how to use specific networks and how to set them up,
  • some tips and secrets when using them,
  • how to set up the tools to monitor these networks,
  • how to get your voice out there in a matter of minutes (having one link end up in several different social networks at one time),
  • and so much more..

social media outlets

Keep this incredible stat in the back of your mind.....  the use of the internet has grown 114% from 2000 to January 2007.  And one other key tip that I learned from Pat in the very first session.... don't be afraid to let anyone follow you, unless they are scary looking... lol  Those were Pat's exact words. People will follow people who will follow some of those that follow you. Think of the endless audience that you could command.

If you want to read a good story about someone that doesn't know about social networking with an opinion, please read this from Chris Elizabeth Griffith - Not Social Networking 2.0  And just a FYI... this post is based on my opinion, yet some facts from researching from true professionals in related to these topics.

And as Josef Katz said in a comment below, "you can't put all your marketing 'eggs in one basket'" .. I wrote about the different ways to network in a post earlier. Please read :

Jeff,

Thanks for the post. We are also endeavoring to improve our marketing and advertising. All of the source you've mentioned have worked in concert to help sustain my business. Always important to know what is working and what isn't. You must always determine the source of the business.

MARIA...... . it truly is. Gee, just blogging changed the way I did business. This is going to add to it tremendously in my opinion.

CAROL..... . if it wasn't for the internet just in the last 2 years, I am not sure where I would have been in regards to business.

LAURA..... .  well, if you are trying to expand your reach and haven't gotten there as of yet, I would highly suggest this webinar that I mentioned.  And thanks for the compliment.

MORGAN..... . my pleasure. You should definitely read up on it and look into it. I want to be in front of the pack when this thing takes off, just as blogging has done.

WILLIAM..... . I agree, you must always determine the source of your business. Without having a marketing plan, your business could fail quickly, especially in this market.  And I truly think that this is the next wave of obtaining business, just as blogging has increased in many peoples business plan.

GITA...... . my pleasure.... and I think that there is a huge difference when it comes to social marketing and e-mail marketing. Sure, with the right e-mail marketing plan, you can see who clicks and reads your e-mails... but how many people actually read the whole thing? Just as in blogs....  as mentioned, I think this is going to take off big time.  thanks

Jeff,

I agree with you but would add that you can't put all your marketing 'eggs in one basket'  each of the other forms of marketing have their place in any business's marketing mix.

We (AR memebers) have an advantage since most people don't understand social media marketing so we have a head start on building our social media networks.

Jeff- this is an excellent post. While I do feel that nothing can replace "shaking hands and kissing babies" social networking will certainly garner you more opportunities to do so than some of the other marketing platforms you mentioned. One of the great things about AR is that professionals like your self are so willing to share their knowledge. Thanks!

JOSEF...... .  I agree, not to put all of your eggs in one basket...  I wrote these two posts in the beginning of the year..  How to market yourself in 2008 - Blogging - techniques & ideas - Part 2 of 3   and   How to market yourself in 2008 - networking - Networking Groups, SOI, and ideas - part 3 of 3   As you can see in part 3, I don't put all of my eggs in one basket, yet you make a great point.

Overall, I agree, that we as AR members have a great advantage over a lot of other people that are on different networking platforms. And I want that head start...

STEVE...... . thanks, I corrected the link right when I received your comment. Thanks... and at least someone else clicked onto the link... lol  It's a cute story...

BETH...... .  I will always agree hand shaking is the best. But even those that are local are usually to busy. If you can't get over the hump of talking to your client on the phone and insist that you meet with them in person, you might lose business this way also.. just my opinion. We are in a rush rush society...  Overall, I would highly recommend to jump on this train now, it might be completely filled in a year from now... and thanks for the polite compliment.

Since I joined AR I have gotten so many other invites to social type sites.... at some point I have to say enough is enough - but it is a great way to get to know other professionals in the industry and it is a great way to build buisness

JOSEF...... . yes, it certainly an advantage in being first....  ie. I got into blogging 2 years ago. In the last 6 months, more loan officers are blogging. I have achieved some high Google rankings because I have built up some quality writing in those 2 years.

DONNA..... . my pleasure.  Sign up for as many social networking sites... use your time wisely though.  And thanks for the compliment.

THESA..... .well, I got those same invites in recent years and I didn't sign up. Now I am going to sign up for everything out there.. well, the major ones.  And link them all together... It is truly a great way to build business.  thanks

I save tons of money on gasoline by online marketing, blogging and keeping up with people online. I just love it!  It does not replace all my other marketing stuff, print stuff, it just gives an added touch, plus people I don't know who search for criteria I write about find me.  I didn't even know who they were!

RENEE..... . yes, I have heard about it. I need to look into it... thanks... just so many little trinkets and gadgets, it's hard to keep up with it, unless this stuff is actually your job.. aka Jeff Turner and a few others..

EVELYN.... . I think online marketing is awesome.  If it wasn't for blogging, I would be a waiter and a few other things... seriously, it increased my business by 70% just this alone.. And now to get in front of more people, just by the social media networking concept?  Well, time will tell... thanks

SONJA..... . my pleasure... and I didn't know either until I heard it from an expert, from a webinar. And I know many that use twitter and a few others to talk about your blogs. I haven't as of yet, but that will be part of my marketing plan in 2009.  thanks

SCOTT..... . we do?  a manager?  Do you have one at your company, a social media manager?  In any case, yes, I truly believe that this will be changing our business. Jump on the bus now...  thanks

Jeff- Social media is the future. We see so much and are so overwhelmed with all the applications but what is so amazing, is that we ain't see nothing yet. We have not even scratched the surface of what we can do on the internet.

Jeff - I am on the websinar with Kevin and Pat as well, and it is awesome. They are good presenters, and keep it moving. I appreciate the information, and agree that by linking out sites together we will continue to expand our audience. I just found out about twitterlocal which helps you identify twitter users within a geographic perimeter around your area.
