10) Never paint Latex paint over oil base paint. What happens?

Answer:

  • Latex paint painted over oil-based paint without a primer will come off if you try to clean off dirt, finger prints, etc.
  • Use of water-based latex paint over more than three or four coats of old alkyd or oil-based paint may cause the old paint to "lift off" the original surface (peal).

Bob - Yuck, that sounds like a nasty problem.  Now how does one tell what kind of paint was used before?

A long time ago, we were in a rental house that the owner had just repainted and the walls started peeling, it was horrible, the painter returned and tried to do a quick fix but the walls were just terrible, I found us another place to live pronto!  I learned then that one latex is not your friend on top of an oil based paint.

The best way to tell is the age of the home.   Older homes have several layers of paint on the interior and exterior and you can bet one of those layers is oil based.  You can always pick a spot and test before starting.

Oh yuck that's a great tip. We use latex based paints for outside painting here in florida to help with water penatration but good tip.
