TWITTER TUTORIAL 101 (of sorts) - The Beginning!
How to figure out Twitter

You hear more and more about how hard it is to figure out Twitter. For some curious reason the learning curve seems to be (is) very steep. But once you are in, you wonder why it was so difficult in the first place. I read many posts, articles, watched video and got nothing. It didn't click. Until finally...

...it happened - I was tweeting, following, being followed and just happily peeping along.

Here is how you can crack the shell to get in and get going.

1. First things first - join Twitter (this is the easy part) - or log in

twitter join page

Once you have joined/logged in you can go to Settings and add on or edit your information

Twitter profile page

2. Find some people to follow - this is were the trouble often starts.
If you click on the search tab, and try to find people - IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!!
It hasn't worked for a while and who knows when it will work again.

find friends on twitter

The easiest way to follow somebody is to click on a link they have provided somewhere (e.g. on a blog)

For Example.

Jason Crouch (here on ActiveRain) - on twitter @jasoncrouch - CLICK on the Twitter link to see his Twitter page

Jeremy Blanton (here on ActiveRain) - on twitter @myrtlebeachblog - CLICK on his Twitter link to see his Twitter page

or ours - on twitter @kennarealestate - CLICK on our link to se our Twitter page

By The Way - You should be following both of this fine gentleman, both here and on Twitter. They write great posts, are informative, helpful, funny and LOVE great food (and deserts - tiramisu anyone...)
(I am not calling them out about because of their love of great food though LOL, how doesn't love great food...)

If you see where somebody says - follow me on twitter @whatevertheUSERNAME, but they don't give you a link to follow them, what you do is type in your browser box: twitter.com/whatevertheyUSERNAME and it will take you to their profile page.
(do not put the @ symbol after .com/)

3. Follow people - People!
Once you are on the user's profile page (by doing the step #2) -  Right UNDERNEATH their photo is a button that says FOLLOW

twitter follow

Click on that button and it will change and say - "checkmark" FOLLOWING

following on twitter

You can do this easily when you know the person's username or came through their link

4. Follow some more people!
Once you are on somebody's profile that you are following - lets use Jason (don't worry, he likes it!)

Jason Crouch Austin Texas Realtor on Twitter

You see Jason is following and being followed A LOT! (see following and followers tabs)

Click on either tab
FOLLOWING - shows you who Jason is following
FOLLOWERS - shows you who are following Jason

I clicked on FOLLOWING (Jason) - and a page appears of the first few people following Jason, skim through and see if you recognize anyone (from Activerain or otherwise).

following people on twitter

Once you locate some one, like I did Kat (from ActiveRain), I click on FOLLOW, now I am following her. The button will now say FOLLOWING.

Repeat to follow others. (NOTE: a few a day, or a few every couple a days is plenty, if you decide to go "nuts" and follow hundreds of people immediately - Twitter may think you are spamming)

On this page - If you DO NOT know the person you can click on their name. It takes you to their profile page, and you can then decided if you would like to follow them or not.

There certainly are other ways to follow people, but this for me was by far the easiest thing to do. More later about how to pick some "important" people to follow.

5. HOORAY! YOU DID IT!

Now click on the home tab up top and you will see what the people you are following are tweeting about.

Many will follow you back so you will soon start to accumulate FOLLOWERS.

If somebody follows you it is courteous to follow back! Sometimes followers will drop out if you do not follow them back!

Following other Realtors® is great for masterminding, and sharing experiences/advice, but if you're a Realtor, the TRUE power is building a list of followers in your area.  Although the search feature on Twitter has been broken for about a month, you can also use twitterlocal.net

PS - Great post BTW: I've added it to "additional resources" on my post called "I learned everything I need to know about social media on Twitter."

Rita - terrific tutorial for new folks on Twitter, or those thinking about it. Once you get started it is pretty easy, just not intuitive to begin with.

I guess it's time for me to join Twitter.  I'm going to follow your orientation closely so I don't become a "twit."

Rita,

The thing that keeps me from signing up is this:  it seems to me that people would have an expectation of immediate feedback, and if that wasn't forthcoming, it could seem as if I were ignoring the person's conversation.

Mike in Tucson - for some reason that doesn't seem to be the case, people come and go, drop off, step back in. Sometimes people announce when they are leaving, sometimes not. It's pretty casual that way. If you miss somebody's reply to you. You will find it next time at your replies section. No biggie. I think people also realize that sometimes you get a phone call, food is burning it the oven, baby woke up, etc. so people don't seem to be offended about it.

Nice explanation on how to build your Following list on Twitter. That's really a key to early success, because it creates a lively, active timeline that shows new Twits how easy it is to interact.

Thanks for your great explaination!  I was wondering when I joined why the find people tab was not working.  Now I need to go to the people I am already following and see if I can find others to follow.
