A number of times people have asked me how I come up with an idea for a new blog every day.  I thought I would share with you some ideas that have worked for me.

  1. Write your blogs ahead of time.  I write most of my blogs during the weekend when I have a bit more time, then post one each day.
  2. Brainstorm with someone.  Sometimes I discuss ideas for blogs with my husband as well as with fellow agents.
  3. Reflect on recent listings.  I generally avoid blogging much about a listing until it has closed and I never mention which listing it is, but I have found that each one generates at least a week's worth of blogs.
  4. Think about things in other areas of your life and how they relate to real estate.
  5. When you read something interesting, pass it on.  It's likely others have not seen the material.
  6. Try to have a blog for each weekday.  Once you start slacking it is easy to forget to blog for weeks.
  7. Read your comments.  Very often ideas for new blogs will be there.
  8. Do not write about your day (most people don't care), but do think about problems you solved that day and what advice you may have.
  9. Read the news.  As many of you have already seen I do not agree with the doom and gloom of the media, but they do provide me with a number of blog ideas.
  10. Write a blog on how to write blogs

Feel free to add your own ideas.

Nicely done and simply, too. Thanks for the insight in how you approach your blogging. I blog for a small real estate company in the Sierra foothills of California. A number 11 to your list (that I do) could be local MLS statistics each month especially highlighting the Residential Sold. There's 1 post per month right there. Thanks again, Nelya. I like the first post. That's a good and easy one. Problem solving is also a fountain of blog ideas. Isn't that what we do all day long? Remember that old, hand-drawn survey? That was a good post. An idea I'm developing, while not novel, is to write about local (your farm area) people, places and goings-on. Once the blog gets going it's a great reason to walk into the just-opened restaurant and introduce yourself.

I love #10 :-)

It's definitely tricky. I see posts which inspire me to write my own posts, but it can be hard to not paraphrase the original author. If it's interesting, the least I can do is offer a new perspective and try not to offend anyone!

I like #7.   I often find I can write a small comment on someone else's post that grows wings and starts to turns into its own post.  Once I reach about the fifth sentence I wind it down and then go to work on a post of my own. I'm not so sure I agree about not writing about your day.  If it's ho-hum business as usual, then maybe.  But sometimes hearing someone else rant actually puts me in a better mood and occassionally gets me laughing. There I go...I'm way past my five.  Thanks for your post.

Nelya,

Excellent idea.  I should try this in the middle of the night when I cannot sleep....:-)

There are weeks when I can bang out 13 to 17 posts without thinking about it. Then there are weeks I only get one post done. I came back here to remind myself I have to stick with the business plan and create a minimum of three posts a week while aspiring to post ten. I love your talking points. Very cool and useful. :-)

I like all your ideas but must say that some of my best blogs come from violating your #8.

Now, I remember swiping my sister's diary and reading it when I was 7, hoping for some interesting insight into her life. She wrote stuff such as, "I walked to the store and bought a bottle of catsup." I laugh even now thinking about that. If that's all that you're doing in life and that's as interesting as it gets, lord help you.

But most of us do something real estate-related every day that we can write about. And even if it's not related, if it's amusing or interesting, people will want to read it.

Great suggestions.  I am still working to become a good blogger.  These are great hints.
