Recently I joined Shine, Yahoo's Social Network.. I was writing about turning 46 years old and how it has seemed to affect me in some ways..... While writing this post I had a profound thought..

Turning 46 for some strange twisted reason has turned into some horrible milestone, some negative monumental event in my life..believe me... I wonder what the heck I am whining about...I should be thankful for every breath that I take.

But really I was thinking about time..and how quickly it goes by..and before you know it...your grand kids graduate from college..and you really hope to live to see that day!  Twisted thoughts maybe..but I admit..they've been mine.

60 seconds equals a minute for everyone at any age right?

But it seems there comes a certain point in people's lives where they think time seems to move faster...

Ever Wonder Why?

As I was writing my first post on Yahoo's Shine..I came up with this theory..and let's see if agree or disagree with my conclusion...

  • "To stop and smell the roses-Really appreciate what you have and notice it and take time to experience it..that moment..you will never get back..the clock always ticks and we continue to move forward.  Time moves the same..but in a sense time moves faster..when you start to realize your time on the planet is very limited..you start to think of mortality....morality...and humanity..and you start to ponder..What have I done to make a difference in this planet?  For me I seem to move faster..my thoughts..my words and my actions..time is flying by... and moving much faster than 10 years ago..  There is a sense of urgency that I feel because of age and time and I believe the urgency is why time seems to move faster as you get older."

Does it feel like time is moving faster?  If so...don't waste it!

Midori you are a spring chicken!  You are so right we need to appreciate what we have and those we love every minute.  Our lives can change in an instant and when it does you don't always get a do over.

You are so right, but remember the alternative to aging is not a good thing.  We do need to make the best of each moment we have and not take for granted the little things.  I make a conscious effort to video in my mind those little moments so I can draw from them when times are tough!

Time does move fast. Gosh, I remember my kids being small and thinking if I have to clean up the toys one more time.  Heck that sounds pretty good to me now.

Midori, the answer is yes, it goes faster and faster as we age.  Do you think it is because we are always moving at lightning speed?  You are right, we never get it back.  One of my favorite sayings, and I have a plaque that says, this life is not a dress rehearsal.  We have to go for it and do it as right as possible.

Midori, I am much older.  Let's not go there.  (Most people think of me as your age.  Thank God!)  But, I have had these same thoughts.  It's relishing when life is good that comes with age.  We have all seen dark moments and experienced some ourselves.  Life is.  But, we need to be optimistic and sometimes that makes us pause and feel grateful.  Which is a blessing.  When horrible things happen, we are in shock.  So, when we are in middle-age, we are much more introspective. I believe the song "100 years" is one of my favorites because it sums it up so sweetly.  Thanks for the thoughtful post.

Hi Midori - everyone needs to appreciate those in their lives and all that they have, even if they think they don't have much.  You never know when it will be taken from you, and your life just changes in the blink of an eye.  As Cindy said above, no one gets a do-over, especially when it's a person who's taken from you.  Cherish every minute you have, even if you're having a bad day - any day is better than no day with someone you love.

I read your post on yahoo - no clue what my username is and didn't want to try to figure it out, so I wasn't able to leave you a comment there. That's a very good article and an excellent reminder to value and cherish each moment.  Make sure YOU do just that - emotions and all....;-)

Ok, now I know that you are writing from 10 years in the future...  Either that or you aren't being truthful about your age...  And time is zipping by for me.

46? You are definitely a spring chicken! You are right, every day is a gift. I heard a saying once that life is like a roll of toilet paper - it gets faster at the end. But you are nowhere near the end, my dear :) and you are wise to appreciate the value of every day.

Hi Midori, yes time does go by faster and faster as we get older. I had a customer about 20 years ago that told me it says it in the Bible that time will go by faster as we age. I have never tried to look it up but I feel time does fly by especially when you are having fun. Like in Orlando.

Wait til you're 57.... then you'll know  just how fast time flies. LOL    You, my Dear, are still very young.

Midori,

I have had a theory about time for many years. Basically, I believe time occupies space. With this in mind, as one ages and grows up and becomes taller or larger they will occupy a getter amount of "time space" and therefore time speeds up for them.

I'm very thankful that I am only 5' 8" tall, however, as I'm in my late fifties I can still slow time down by simply going on a diet and losing 10 pounds!!

I guess the benefits of being a late bloomer chasing after a two year old that I had in my 40's has its rewards. I'm too darn busy to even notice how fast time is going!

Time is moving faster now than it used to -- at least it seems that way.

My grade school teacher always said that this was such.  when you're 6, that year was 1/6th of your life.  When your 46, it's 1/46th of your life.  Use it wisely.  Nice post.

Hi Midori - I like your thoughts about a sense of urgency. I also think that as we get older, more and more things compete for our mind's attention which creates a feeling of never being able to get it all done. Compare that to a young child, who focuses just on what they're doing right now, in that moment. To them, time seems infinite.

Midori,  If you're feeling time go faster at 46, my time must be flying its butt off at 61.

Introspection is a natural process for us human beings.  There is usually a reason why it happens.  Something we need to pay attention to.

Thanks for sharing fellow traveler.

I'll be 41 next month. The number doesn't really bother me, but getting old certainly sucks for a multitude of other reasons >=I

Time does go by much faster as you get older... but you enjoy it more (or at least I do!). I also feel there aren't too many toads out there that I haven't kissed, so there's a prince (in cowboy boots) out there somewhere... if I ever have the time and inclination again.

Midori,

All I can say is just wait and see how you feel in another 10 years!!!!  And yes my dear you will make it that long, you'll see.

I hope that you have a GREAT day ma'am!!

Life is too short not to enjoy it while you can...I'm not waiting until I'm 80 to have fun...at 80 I'm not even sure I'll be able to. No affense to people who are 80!

Midori - you are obviously moving slower now that you are older  46 than you were when you were younger. It's a law of Einsteinian physics, the closer you get to the speed of light, the slower time passes. Just wait until you hit my age.

On the other hand, all very good thoughts. We have so much more behind us than ahead of us, it looks like what's left goes by quicker, especially if we feel we have so much more left to do.

Hi Midori,

Yes, absolutely, without a doubt, time passes much faster now then it did when I was in my 20's, 30's etc. It has a way of doing that. It has nothing to do with aging, believe me when I tell you that because my grandmother told me it was so.

Thanks for the post.

Midori - I hit that feeling of panic when I turned 25 for some reason. I got over it through it tho. I turned 50 last year and noticed that time was flying by and decided to do something about it. First, I threw myself a big birthday party and then I signed up to do the Country Music Half Marathon! It was my favorite year that I can remember in a long time!

Now I'm really focused on being the best that I can be!!! You're going to make it just fine. :)

The speed of time increases in direct proportion to the amount of it you have left.

Get used to it.

It'll only get worse.

Midori, Thank you so much for awakening me to the thoughts of growing old! Ha Ha .....Yep I felt that way at 30, then 40, then 50...I will turn 55 next month. Your right it does seem to go by faster and faster. I like to put it into segments. I think back to how long it took to get to be 20 and then I think well maybe I still have at least 20 to go and that makes it feel like I have a ton of time left to do all the things I still want to do. What is wierd is to realize it is time to work on my bucket list.......HMMMMMM. Can't wait to see what thoughts you provoke tomorrow! Debbie

Hi Midori,

You are not the only one, I am 31 and I feel the same way. :)

I think your feelings are indeed a fact though.  One year is a smaller percentage of your life than it is for somebody that is only 16.  So in that respect, time does move faster the older you get.

Kind of like a roll of toilet paper, once you get close to the end, it starts going real quick. :)
