There has been so much written about surviving, staying the course, and persisting in our real estate businesses - especially in light of all the challenges that we're facing.
Today, as I noticed our bougainvillea blooming again (pictured here), a word came to mind - resilience. This is so applicable to our businesses.
The bougainvillea blooms a few times a year but in between cycles looks like a bunch of dead sticks. But it bounces back again into all of its beauty.
Something else remarkable happened today that underscores this concept. My favorite NASCAR driver, Jimmy Johnson, won his 3rd consecutive championship.
He had many challenges this year to bounce back from and become the favorite to repeat as champion. At one point early in the season he was quite far back in the standings. Even when the playoffs started he was several places back.
Winning once is quite an accomplishment. Winning twice is something most teams in the sport don't get to do - let alone do it back-to-back. Then add a 3rd consecutive title - it has only been done once before and that was 30 years ago.
There is a tendency to relax, to succumb to the pressures of the competition, to doubt your abilities. This is where resilience comes in - to come back week after week fresh, energetic, and ready to go.
For us, it's bouncing back from sales that almost happened but didn't, from customers that treated us poorly, from showings that didn't go as planned, from listing appointments that didn't work out, from mortgage loans that didn't get approved, from the sale we lost to another agent, from the people who canceled their listing or decided not to sell, from the people who can't make up their minds.
Resilience is a great trait to have and something to remember when we encounter a litlle setback or bump in the road. We're in this for the long term.
