Late Fall Hikes: Be Prepared

By

Here in Knoxville the cold began to set in this weekend. You can smell that familiar smoke of fireplaces coming alive to help take the chill out of the air and warm homes. When the chill comes, you know that the holidays are not far behind. Most of the cold comes overnight with gusting winds chilling faces and ears during the day.

Though the cold has arrived, many people continue to enjoy the outdoors. There is something about the starkness of the trees and the knowledge that the bears and snakes have settled in for the long winter. Another pleasant discovery while hiking in the mountains during this late fall period is that the undergrowth has died back revealing many of the smaller woodland animals. You are much more likely to see rabbits and raccoons during this time of year.

It is important if you want to hike during the cooler months that you decide if you want to attempt a multiple day hike or a day hike. Whichever you decide, you will need to make sure you have the cooler weather gear appropriate for the weather. Whereas a light jacket and summer sleeping bag may have worked in early fall, late fall will call for at least a three season sleeping bag and an insulated jacket and gloves. I would highly recommend multiple layers because you can easily add or remove a layer to suit your body's warmth requirements. It is also important to be prepared for unexpected snow storms as well. Preparation is the key to enjoying the great outdoors during cold weather.

Get you Adventure Gear together and maybe start with a day hike. If you find that you enjoy the stark solitude and cooler weather, then you might consider an overnight or multiple day hike. If you are an outdoor person, don't let timidity keep you from exploring the wonders of hiking during this time of year.

Rich,

I have begun jogging outside now... Ohio, that is and boy are my arms tired...numb!  I would agree that equipment can make the experience sooooo much better.

I will soon be visiting my local runners store to buy some thermal/lycra winter outfits.

Weather is definitely getting cooler here too...fall hikes are so great because you don't have the summer heat.

Hi Rich-I like this post. It is indeed getting cooler here. The winds whips thru this area pretty good and can chill you to the bone, even if the temps are that low. As you said the key is to dress in layers. But many people actually like these temps better for the outdoor activities such as hiking. The summer heat can be very draining while the cool crisp air can be invigorating. if you go have a good time. :-)

Sean - I am not a runner but I do enjoy a good hike. My sister does marathons and I am in awe of that!

Patricia - That is very true, in the summer you definitely have to take more breaks when doing anything that requires exertion.

Pat - I agree, I know several people who prefer late fall hikes for just that reason. Summer hikes are nice too though when everything is green and in bloom.

I love the smell of fall and winter.  The scent of burning wood, pies in the oven, hot coffee......and while I can smell these things year round ... they always smell so much richer in fall and winter.

Rich, I love to get out into nature. However, when it comes to all the walking, I just can not see doing it.

Carol - I think those things are comforting and warming so perhaps we appreciate them more when it is freezing out.

Danny - It is much more pleasant in the cooler months.

Joan - It was actually spitting snow last night and this morning but snowshoes!?! No thanks.

Terry - You will love blogging. I have found two keys, fresh content and being responsive to your commentors will get you regular readers. Also, if you would, could you please edit your above hyperlink to make it open in a new window rather than redirecting away from this page? I would do it, but I cannot edit your comment. All you have to do is hi-light the hyperlink as if you were changing the link or first inserting it. Use the second option, termed "Target" and select the second option, "open in a new window". This should correct the issue. Thanks!
