I Love Avocados

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty of California, Inc. CA DRE #01490977

I admit it - I love avocados. I enjoyed them while living back East, with an occasional foray to a great Mexican place in Cambridge that made the best guacamole (other than mine, of course).

Now that I am here in California, my passion for avocados has increased, in part because they are so plentiful and cheap. I particularly like them grilled. And, since living here in the last 2 years I have also had:

Avodaco ice cream (yep, I did...it was quite good)

Avocado soup (both chilled and hot)

Avocado mousse

Another favorite, however (in keeping with the original purpose of this blog) is a small street in Leucadia (the quaint, funky part of Encinitas with a real surfing feel to it) called, what else, Avocado Street.

Avocado Streetis only 2 blocks long, leading from the coastal highway (Route 101) that runs from Oceanside south to Del Mar along the coast, over to Neptune, the most expensive Encinitas street as it runs along the bluff above the Pacific Ocean (homes there, at least detached ones, start around $1.5M and head up to about $9M). The end of the street near the 101 is pretty funky - cottages, apartments, vacation rentals closely line the short street, which is often packed with cars.

As you head up the hill (west) and crest the hill the beautiful Pacific comes into view. 100 feet later the street ends at Neptune. I guess my fondness for the street stems from my first house hunting trip to the area 3 years ago. My wife and I were at the RE/MAX convention downtown and decided to take time to look at houses, since we ere seriously thinking of a move.

The first Open House we went into was a house at the top of Avocado with great ocean views (bottom left photo, at top right). We were in love. Alas, timing was not right - we did not move for over a year later, but that house stayed in my memory. It is fun and drive by and dream (with a little regret as I expect it has appreciated a bit despite the housing market changes in the San Diego area).

[sorry about the port-a-potty in the pic just above on the left - there is a new home being built on the bluff, and you know how construction sites are...the house to the right of that lot poking into the pic is on the market for $8.5M]

Nice blog about the fruit and the street!  I didn't know you could grill the fruit. I will have to try that.

I could live on guacamole!  And, ever try slivers of Haas avocado with scrambled eggs?  Yum!

Great pics too, Jeff.  Thanks for sharing.

All your comments are about avacados.  Wrong!!!  Who cares about avacados!  Your headline overpowered your content in your blog about the neighborhood!  That Stinks! Your headline should get people to look to learn more about your content...not that I like avacados with my eggs!  Sheesh.

Grilled, humm ? Will have to try it, do you do anything special (spray it to non stick or olive oil ?
I grew up in S. Florida and had an avacado tree bigger than our little house! It was my favorite tree to climb...until a snake slithered over my leg one day!

Strangers would knock on our door to get permission to go  back and pick up fruit as the tree was loaded and they fell in dozens..you have to pick them up or they spoil.. Some people came to take them to the swap shop and sell them for a buck! Wow, that was a tucked away memory! They were the huge ones, i like the little haas better, more flavor in my opinion. Large ones good for salad as a bit firmer and take to the dressings.

ok, I am now craving a margarita !

and I get Lime...!

Thank you all for your comments. I meant, initially, to just talk about the street, but given that I am a bit of a foodie, the digression just happened. I like the haas best too - as said, better flavor. We can sometime get a bag of about 25 for $5!! Avocado in omelets is pretty good too.

For grilling - I just halve them, take out the pit, put a little olive oil on (salt and pepper too if you want), then grill on both sides - 3-4 minutes total will be enough unless you really like them cooked!. They wIll get kinda brown on the open side. I have grilled on both gas and charcoal. I like to eat them right out of the shell. They are also good with a little lime sprinkled on after grilling or other favorite seasonings. Be creative!! Good sliced on salads too.

Bob appetit!

Jeff

And here we thought this challenge was about street names!! Oooh, look - I got avocado for my human check.

Is an avocado a fruit?  I think of it as a vegtable.... it is one of the words we use here isn't it?  Avocado ice cream?

Thanks for the tour of your area. I have not been there in years.

Jeff, I have to admit I have never even tasted an avacado.  Living in WV, we don't run across many of them.  I don't know, maybe they're in the local stores.  I'll have to pay attention next time and maybe grab one of them.

I think it IS considered a fruit, Maureen, but I was not positive. but according to Wikipedia.... It hangs from a tree, that's good enough for me. It's sort of like tomato - you think of it as a veggis but it ain't.

Sarah - I don't know how well they travel so they might be hard to find. They really are good, but pretty mild in flavor.

Kaye - now that DOES sound good. Especially if you can sit by the pool, or better, at the beach! :)

Thanks for your comments.

LOL! Love the post! I LOVE Guacamole. Avocados are my favorite, especially during Summer Time. There is nothing like a great Guacamole to eat with a Carne Asada plate. Or any BBQ for that matter. Maybe you can prepare your best guacamole for the AR picnic that is being planned for May.

What is it about avocados that you love so much?  Do they have to be California avocados?

Mike - Nope they don't have to be from California. The ones we got back in Boston were from Florida I think. I like the texture and the flavor - I believe they also have some vitamins and minerals in them that you don;t commonly find in other foods. But they have a high fat content so there is the tradeoff.

Sarah - Yep it is an odd little street, and one of many in that part of town.
