While performing a recent home inspection, I informed the listing agent that the dishwasher is under manufacturer recall due to a potential fire hazard.  His reaction was; "What do you want me to do about it"?

There are some agents who dislike home inspectors because the "deal" may fall apart.  I work very hard to protect my clients during the inspection process.  Safety is always my number one priority. I only report what is found during the inspection, certainly nothing is fabricated.  I do work with many agents that understand and appreciate the inspection process.  They continue to refer me to their clients, because of my dedication and detail.  For the few that do not appreciate inspectors, remember we are also protecting you from possible litigation if some major defect is discovered after move in.  You may want to reconsider before using the "Easy inspector list".

Amen John. The best inspectors are honest, dilligent, good communicators, and non-inflammatory. Often as an inspector you are around folks who are nervous or upset or defensive. I once had an inspector who prided himself on finding stuff no one else could find. That was great until we called in the experts (he'd say "call in a roofer" for instance) and then the experts would say "it's fine". Always hard when there's a conflict. But I think that inspector thought if he was really good, he'd be SO hard on a house that no one could doubt his knowledge. After too many conflicts with experts (and a whole lot of upset clients) I had to change. The inspector I work with now is great. He calls what he sees, he tries to find everything, but when he does call for an unknown further inspection, there's always "something there". And he's calm with the clients - so I'm very thankful!!

Great post. Keep on doing the right thing. In the long run, it always pays off!

It takes a certain kind of person to do that business...I am not one of them...but someone has to do it.

Keep doing what you do. Because the moment that agent closes a deal you did the home inspection on a something goes wrong guess what he or she is going to tell the buyer. Well you had a home inspection.

As a Realtor and as a listing agent, I would definitely want you to tell me about the Recall on the dishwasher.

Honestly I cringe when it comes to home inspections. But, as much as I disagree or don't like some of the comments and findings in the reports, I definitely would want the inspector to be truthful and accurate.  Inspections are another layer of protection for EVERYONE involved.

I can't believe an agent responded that way. If that house burnt down that day, I bet they wouldn't have felt that way!
