Catching Striper off LBI, Choosing the Right Mortgage Consultant; and What They Have in Common

By
Mortgage and Lending with Superior Mortgage

This is my first attempt at a blog so here goes. First off I am a Senior Loan Officer with Superior Mortgage and I am an avid saltwater fisherman. Even being in the business and loving what I do I would be bored with a blog that only spoke of mortgage related topics. It is my intention to provide you with insight into the mortgage industry, an understanding of the different types of mortgages available, and updates in this tumultuous time of the constant changes that affect us all. Along with that I intend to interject blogs about fishing, local happenings, my family, and anything else I feel someone may enjoy reading. Whenever possible I will try to combine the topics as I am doing today. There will be lame attempts at humor along the way as well. To sum it up, I want this blog to be considered edutainment, you should come away better informed and entertained for at least a few minutes.

This time of year is probably my favorite time to go fishing. The stripers are abundant and easy to find and catch with a little bit of knowledge. We usually take the boat out Barnegat Inlet and either head north along Island Beach State park or south along Long Beach Island. Either way the game plan is the same. The driver steers the boat and watches the sounder and everyone else on board is looking for birds. Once you find the birds (aka a birdplay) you’ve found the fish. Now grab a stiff rod with a 6 ounce diamond jig and you are in. The hard part this time of year and for at least a few more weeks until the water temperature drops sufficiently is getting your lure through the voracious bluefish and down to the bottom where the stripers are.

Here are a few ways I increase my chances of hooking up with a striper and not a blue:

1. The faster the current is running the heavier the jig you have to use. The heavy jigs allow you to stay in contact with the bottom longer therefore presenting your offering to the stripers longer.

2. Cast up current so that you are drifting towards your jig, for those of you that fish for fluke this will be opposite of what you are used to. Again this allows you to bounce the jig along the bottom longer.

3. Use a plain jig, no tails or teasers. These work fine for bass but they work way too well for bluefish.

4. Fish the outer edges of the birdplay. The bluefish are the primary fish in the middle of the birdplay tearing through the bait and giving the birds something to eat. You do not have to be in the middle of it to catch stripers and you don’t risk putting the fish down by motoring over them. This will keep the boats around you happy as well.

5. Use a heavy monofilament leader not a wire leader. 100 pound monofilament will hold up to a bluefish most of the time (be sure to check it after every fish for nicks). The wire leaders mess up the action of the jig and will result in many fewer fish.

Now for picking the right mortgage consultant and how it can possibly be compared to what you read above. Your mortgage consultant or loan officer is very crucial to the process of buying a home. Picking the right or wrong one goes a long way to determining the issues and headaches you have along the way. Most loan officers are like the bluefish, very aggressive and quick to take the bait, and like the bluefish they are very abundant and easy to find. You need a loan officer who is more methodical like the striper, they may be much harder to find but they are worth the time it takes. A good loan officer will put the client’s needs in front of his or her wants. They will work with you step by step a long the way, educating you and making recommendations based on your specific situation. There are no surprises with this loan officer, everything will be communicated to you up front so you know what is expected of you and what you should expect. Not all loan officers are created equal, so choose wisely and don’t end up with bluefish for dinner.
