Carpe diem!

As I watch my two Labradors play in the river and run about the meadow today in the 60 degree weather, it's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is around the corner.  As the birds chirp and the sun hits my back, I am reminded once again that Mother Nature is unpredictable!

Perhaps more unpredicatable than Mother Nature, are the various markets that drive the economics of the world.  When asked, "When do you think the real estate market is going to hit bottom? Or when do you think we'll see prices go up?" every bit of me wants to shout back, "If I knew when that time was going to be I wouln't be working right now, instead I'd be sunbathing on my own island, reading my favorite book while sucking down a frozen cocktail in a coconut shell because my ability to predict the future would have made me a real estate billionaire!!!".   Instead, I quickly compose myself with a deep breath and kindly respond with "Unfortunately I don't have a crystal ball and without one it's really tough to say when real estate values will hit bottom.  We'll know when the bottom has been reached when things start to go up again".

Wow, if only we all had a crystal ball, the economic crisis of our country would seize to exist.  We all could have made plans according to the timing of the real estate market's bubble burst, the plummeting of the stock market, sky rocketing gas prices, and the harsh grocery bills we would be paying at the check stand to fuel our families' tummies.

The truth is that we don't know when the bottom is coming, what surprise tomorrow bring or who we will meet next year year, uncertainty is a big part of our lives.  Not knowing is uncomfortable at times but imagine knowing or being able to predict life's every twist or turn, wouldn't that be boring?  Perhaps instead of focusing on what we don't know or can't predict, we should take comfort in focusing on those things in life we do know.

As we approach the holiday season, which can feel stressful and overwhelming even in strong economic times, take solace in your life's certainties rather than the uncertainties so that you may seize the day.  Carpe diem!
