The Murphy Stations at the Haines City and Cypress Gardens Blvd. (Winter Haven) Wal-Mart stores were slammed today.  Why? Well, because gas is selling below $2.00 per gallon!  Whoo Hoo!  I feel as if I should rush out and purchase several certified gasoline storage jugs and fill 'em up just in case prices spike again!

I know I should be more astute than this.  But I just don't understand.  And I need help. It seems as if almost overnight, gas prices here in the Winter Haven, FL area have dropped below the $2.00 mark.  I'm sure some refinery recently resumed optimal output levels, or perhaps we're benefiting from some unforeseen glut in oil supplies here in the southeast.  Maybe those blasted oil speculators really messed up and we're somehow catching a windfall from their greedy come-uppins?

We can't know all things... and I'm up for a knowledge download.  So - bring on the Rain!

32 Comments on Educate Me! Why Are Gas Prices Now Down to $1.96/Gallon? (Not that I'm complaining!)

I am with you in not complaining! Gas here in Spokane, WA is at$1.85 a gallon right now. It does seem to change daily and sometimes several times in a day (made especially easy now that most stations use those reader boards and can change the price in a heartbeat)! I'm sure that it has something to do with a larger supply right now and less demand but I don't really "get" it either. I think there was a little price fixing going on but that is just my opinion.

I would love to get a tanker filled while gas is under $2 a gallon, but I'm pretty sure that there is something in my PUD's CC&R's that restricts storing a tanker filled with gasoline in your backyard! And the insurance would be phenomenal!!! :)

Libby, I love it!  I'm with you on the tanker idea.  But, as you stated - am pretty sure my HOA would Poop a Cow!  :)  Let's enjoy it while we can!

Kevin - It seems that fuel prices are always speculative whether or not there is supply.

Too bad we can't pre-pay for gas as this price. They offer gift cards at certain dollar amounts but I would totally go for buying 100 gallons of gas at the current price and take my chances if it goes down. Kinda like a coffee card where you pre-pay. With the advent of gift cards, I actually haven't seen those in a while now that I think about it!

$1.84/gallon yesterday here in Maryland and I'm not asking why.

7:03pm • #7

$1.71 today in Lubbock,TX.  Too bad it's not like the forever stamps you could buy and pay one price and load up on them to use forever.  Of course around our part of the country some people own oil and are upset that the price of the barrel is low.  All things even out, kind of like big months and little months in real estate sales.

I had watched Bill O'Reilly back in July and I can't think if the guys name but he said then you watch in November the price of gas will be below 2.00 a gallon and it will stay that way.How he ever knew is beyond me.If he is reading this I would like to say Thank you.

I paid 1.95 today @ Pilot Station off 75 near Jones Loop.

I predicted that gas would go down before the election...and it did.

Now, I predict that after Obama takes office, it will go back up.  I hope I am wrong.

When this happens, I will feel quite certain that the gas prices are politically motivated, which really translates to greed motivated.  The wealthiest men in the world have made a killing in the recent past.

First - they bet 1 Trillion Dollars that the stock market would drop 1 Trillion Dollars, and it did.  And they set up a website giving 3 months advance notice that it would happen within 3 months.  I happened just as they predicted.  By betting against the stock market, they made it fall, and they pocketed the windfall.

Second - Look how much money they made on gas when it jumped and kept climbing until it went over $4/gallon.  Oh wait, we really don't know how much they really made, but we know they made a lot.

Are the pieces of the puzzle falling into place yet?

I too want someone to tell me what's going on.

I thought that big oil and OPEC had total control of the price of oil.  Weren't they the evil ones who kept jacking up the price at will?  Are they now just being really nice to the world and giving us all a break?  I think there should be some Congressional hearing on this.

$2.14/gallon for regular unleaded, in Everett, WA, on 11/18/08.  I watched T. Boone Pickens on television yesterday morning, and he's predicting that it"ll be $3-$4/gallon again by this time next year.

I'm with everyone else, I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth, I also read that Opec was going to slow down production to raise the price.. though...so stay tuned

Kevin, sometime in early summer I was watching MSNBC, or at least I think I was.  Well, anyway, they had a reporter on there talking about the high gas prices and how they would remain high throughout most of the summer before falling again in the winter.  He said that the gas we use in the summer months is a cleaner blend of fuel, which is more expensive to produce.  The cleaner fuel is used to help combat increased summer ozone levels and to reduce the amount of hydrocarbons released in the air by automobiles.  So, I guess this would help to explain why we see higher gas prices during the summer months.  He also said when the weather gets colder, we routinely revert back to the use of non-blended gasoline, which subsequently explains the lower gas prices during the winter.

Kevin, I'm not sure if this fully explains the higher summer gas prices, but I believe it at least partially does.

As the world braces for a recession whose depth and duration is anybody's guess, one silver lining of the downturn is already clear: the crisis at the gas pump is over. Just three months ago, oil prices hit $147 per bbl., pushing the price of gas in some parts of the U.S. to more than $5 per gal. But amid signs of a global economic slowdown, crude prices have cratered, and gas prices are following. Oil was trading at $78.63 per bbl. Tuesday, while the average price of a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. has fallen to $3.15 and will likely fall further in the coming weeks. That's because, along with falling global crude-oil prices, the refining capacity of the U.S.'s Gulf Coast that was lost as a result of Hurricanes Ike and Gustav is coming back onstream, which will mean a significant increase in gas supply next month.

$1.84 at the Wal-Mart down yonder!  Would love to see $1.57, like ol' Jeff and Lisa out there in Texas!

Kevin, You could always move West a few hundred miles...not quite as pretty, but no humidity and no hurricanes (at least in the part of Texas we are in).

Kevin - Come on!  Housing is cheap as well and we know some great Realtors who can find you a house.  We could always use another good mortgage broker here as well.  Best wishes.

Boy, I really hate to rub it in, but I've seen it as low as $1.51 here in Lubbock now!!!  I'll try to take a picture and post this week if it dips below $1.50.

Jeff and Lisa! You're killing me!  Though, we're down to $1.82  - which is very nice. You can almost feel the relief folks around here are experiencing.

I did manage to find a good website to track gas prices. Check it out.  I set it for Lubbock so you can keep track easily.  :)

Jeff and Lisa ... you guys are awesome!  Thanks for the great picture!  If you insert a photo from the "tree" icon, the "appearance" tab should let you resize it.  Check out this tutorial... it might shed some light on adding pictures to AR!  :)

Thanks Kevin...I'll give it a try and hopefully shoot y'all a new photo with lower gas prices.  I'm afraid that it won't be long before they bounce back up.  We traveled through a good part of Texas over Thanksgiving and nobody had it as low as Lubbock.  My parents said it was like $1.59 in Houston.  What is Florida doing?

Well, thanks to my handy dandy gas price checker on the right hand side of this here site you're on right now (under my picture) ... looks like RaceTrac has regular unleaded at $1.77/gal.  :)  Punch in your zip code and mile radius to see what's near you!
