I awoke to read many of this fan's favorites blogs today including ever humorous and lovely Susan Mangigian (West Chester, PA) and wanted to see what she had to say. Seems like she had been hit with the new MeMe running around on the Rain which to me looks like a version of a book report.

She was especially nice enough not to tag me, but it didn't take long and other wonderful pranksters came along in the form of Melody Bottling (The Colony, TX) and Patricia Beck (Colorado Springs, CO) and they got me. Seems you point at the nearest book to you and do the following:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 56.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next
two to five sentences.
5. Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book or the intellectual one. Pick the Closest.
6. Tag five people to do the same

*The one book that this can not be is the Bible*

Tribes

My book on my desk is called Tribes by Seth Godin. While I haven't cracked it open yet it is about social networking and the Internet and how less than famous people band together about their collective interests and a leader comes from these groups. Probably very fitting for all of us who blog away writing and reading here on Active Rain. Now you know what your mad scientist's brain here is thinking about understanding next. Sorry Susan, I am still hopelessly a non-fiction reader. I promise to do better. Anyway from pg. 56 on...

Folks who do nothing but mindlessly follow instructions let you down in two ways. First they are not going to do the local leadership when tribe members interact.... Second, they're not going to do a very good job of recruiting new members to your tribe.

Sounds like Seth is a strong proponent for leaders, wherever they come from.

I am going to be a leader "rulebreaker" and not torture any more folks with this particular MeMe. My not so random act of kindness for the day. Enjoy all your reading. You will grow most in the next five years from the people you meet and the books you read.

Nice job Gary... That's at least one strain of the MeMe that won't spread!   I've got a copy of Godin's book but haven't cracked it open yet either.

Gary - Go ahead and read it!  It's only about 150 pages.  I finished it last week, and I think it's a good read.  I am working on my own book meme right now.

Gary ~ How appropriate, and with all the networking sites popping up (I've lost count of how many I've actually signed on with) this would be an interesting read.  Let me know if you like it.

Jesse: Have to kill off this strain the way I figure it.

Jason: Thanks for the recommendation on this book and I look forward to what else you are reading.

Charles: Got to break out of that mold now and then. I was trying to spare others this grief. It wasn't too bad, just ANOTHER blog to write. Hey Charles, when are we going to get paid for this?

Mel: Now you now I love you Ms. Prankster : )

Kathy: This one looks like a good one. Jason above recommends it. I'm just starting it.

Pat: You would laugh. The book next to Tribes I have is The Shift. It was a gift to me from another Realtor and I have scanned it and know the basic principles. Mischievous may also be a good word for me, or devious.

Richard: Very freaky. An Active Rain connection.

Hi Gary-You have given me the courage to talk to you again. Thank you so much. This so cool. I've never done anything like this before. Somehow I feel I can trust you. I never thought I ever would be talking to the author of such magnificent words and that he would actually respond back to me. That is so incredible. I hope I didn't put you to "s.lee.p" earlier. I see as well as inspiration you have a sense of humor too. While I have gotten up the courage to chat with you online. I'm not ready to go public so to speak. It has nothing to do with you I assure you. Just a bit unsure of this online media platform yet. I've taken a big step for me, by actually talking to you. I guess it must be that sense again that I feel safe with you and I feel you'll listen with your heart. Reading is a passion of mine and I've heard about that book. As I told you I have quite a library here at home and my Mom supplies me with magazines as well. My favorite book though is the bible. Now kind "sir" because you have been so gracious and kind to talk to me, I will just let you know that the s.(is the first letter of my name. lee(is my middle name) and p.(is the first initial of my last name. I hope that helps makes me a little less anonymous to you. Thank you again for your time and for listening. Bless you kind "sir".  Goodnite-I have an early day tomorrow.  Look forward to more inspiration from my fav author.

S. Lee P.: I love how I get to address you, Kind of like the secret admirer card in elementary school : ) I am just like you, a reader and also a writer. Feel free to comment here and everywhere as often as you like. We are all good friends. If you sign up with a profile on Active Rain, then you can write or just read if you like with your name in the signature area. There really is nothing to be afraid of here. We only have like 110,000 members with about 5,000 truly active. The Bible on this MeMe they didn't let you select from or all of us that read it could pick parts of it we like. Look forward to hearing from you later. Pick and choose from the many nice people here. They will reply to you. And thank you again for all your kind comments. Most of the writers here are profuse readers I would venture to say.

Gary - that was a true act of kindness, as I did partake in that MeMe....who came up with this one???? And, why?

10:33pm • #13

Gary,

I certainly agree with your last statement.  That is why I return to your Blog regularly.  I have been Memed twice, recently.  UGH!

Carol: Sometimes I think the AR Gods themselves throw a MeMe idea out there just to spin up the traffic to Active Rain. Could be true!!

Hi Derenda: We can over MeMe each other and then it gets to be downright work!! Good luck with it.

Fran: Seth Godin seems to be well known by everyone but you and me. He is an author of ten bestesllers including The Dip. He is the founder and CEO of Squidoo.com, a fast growing tribe. He is also a business blogger at http://www.SethGodin.com

Boy Gary, almost everyone is putting up these meme's today. I got tagged 3 times and still  haven't had time to do mine as yet but I will try by late night. Do you think I should select 15 people, 5 for each of my tags?

This was much more fun to read about---the actual book with your review...I just put in on my book list. And yeah...I shy away from those meme and chain letters too...they give me so much anxiety...almost like taking a test!

Good for you! Pretty much a waste of time to me those MeMe's are but I try to play nice occasionally. Really enjoyed your Maxine cartoons, BTW!

Good Morning "kind sir"-I don't know if two comments are allowed on one blog or not, but I just had to smile at your response to me in the first sentence about a secret admirer in elementary school. Reminds me of a song by George Strait "Check Yes or No" A cute little song about two 3rd graders(who grow up and marry). It started out where the girl passes a note to a boy she likes and says "do you love me, do you want to be my friend" and he is supposed to "check or yes or no". I like the idea of having you as a friend. <smile>. You being a reader as well as a writer I thought I would share my second favorite book, the Bible being my first choice. The title is "90 Minutes in Heaven" by Don Piper. I was a fascinating book talking about his real life experience of his(90 min. in heaven). If you haven't read it. I would highly recommend it. Thank you so much for your response to me. I'm am so honored that you will continue talking to me via this medium. I do not want to overstep though by commenting more than once as I know you have a huge following and are a very busy man, I'm sure. I have a busy day as well, so I'll say good bye for now. Look forward to reading what you write that will inspire me next. Thank you for your time and your talent. Bless you and your day.

(This was a daily inspiration I recently read-"Put your heart, mind, intellect, and soul even to your smallest tasks. This is the secret of success".) I think that is what you do everyday with your wonderful writing.(even though it is probably a big task and not a small one) I apologize for making this so long and will not make a habit of it, as I respect that your time is valuable.

Gary, How nice of you not to MeMe anyone!  This is going around faster then the flu and some of the books sound pretty interesting like yours.  Now we'll all need to catch up :)

William: Trust me if you tag 15 people you might LOSE subscribers : ( Be careful with THAT idea.

Mara: I agree when you get tagged with a MeMe the anxiety level goes up. The first one I did a long time ago I got all worked up about, now just go with the flow.

Pat: Now the way the corruptible story goes Pat is I was sweet and innocent to you (and maybe Susan Mangigian) got here. That's my story and I am sticking with it. BTW Pat, s. lee p. is giving you a run for the money now with the length of the comments. See, you set the bar high and others follow.

Susie: I'm glad you play nice. I'd hate to be on your bad side ; )

s. lee p: One thing about commenting, there are no rules. A commenter can come back multiple times so you did well. Think about "hijacked" posts. The commenter comes back numerous times to get all those thoughts in. Your lengthy comment is welcome. Pat Preston has trained me already on this venue. That check yes check no is a great song by George Strait. People in relationships testing the waters with each other. It has to be done. I am going to check out that 90 minutes in Heaven. Putting your ALL into everything you do is the best way to live. Shows passion. That is a great inspirational thought. Don't be a stranger mystery woman : )

Patricia Beck: Glad you were a trooper and did the MeMe, then got me LOL. Yes, on this book Jason Crouch recommended it.

Hi Susan: You ARE of course the lovely and humorous Mrs. Mangigian. xxoo Growing with books and people you will be way ahead of the average Joe or Jane.

Carole: I was surprised this MeMe took off like it did. I guess it proves all we Bloggers are a bunch of readers too.

Hi Gary- Guess you and Miss Pat are both rulebreakers not tagging anyone else.  Where did this start anyway???  I think Russell Lewis mentioned ActiveRich, but not positive.  Anyway, I'm glad it's done and I won't be doing it again!  phewww
