According to Gartner Research, the tech industry accounts for approximately 2 % of global carbon dioxide emissions .  THAT IS THE SAME AS WHAT IS GENERATED BY THE AVIATION INDUSTRY!

Here are some tips for GREEN computing...

  • Use power saving options such as having your computer go into sleep mode when idle for a few minutes
  • Change you old CRT monitor (are there any left?) to a new flat screen and turn them off when not in use
  • Get you computer debugged so that it runs faster
  • Laptops are more efficient than desktops
  • Instead of a screen saver photo just have a blank screen which saves energy.
  • Donate old computers, don't throw them away.  (Go to www.datadoctors.com/recycle to learn how to clean them first)
  • Download music instead of buying a CD, go paperless in your business as much as possible, and look for any way you can to save energy.

All of us spend hours each day at our computers.  If each of us did a little bit it would add up!

I have to question whether a laptop computer is more efficient than a desktop computer. If it takes me two hours to do Active Rain comments on a laptop computer because of the non-standard keyboard and the slower processor versus one hour to do Active Rain comments on a desktop computer with the faster processor, where's the efficiency.

For the same amount of money, I can buy two desktop computers and hire another person to help me make more money, or I can buy one laptop computer with a non-standard keyboard and a slower process. Where's the efficiency?

I'm not buying it, so to speak.

All the rest I'm fine with. I've been 95% paperless for three years now. I soooooooooo enjoy not having all those paper files around anymore.

Jean, Good points. I knew that computers used up a lot of energy but not that much energy. I pretty much do what is in your list...

Jean, I loved the Title as soon as I read it, it was a WOW moment....Anyway I have a laptop and use it as a desktop. I am still haveing a problem with going paperless. Everyone wants a print out of this a printout of that. My HomeInspector uses a web based report. Then The Transaction coordinator on one side wants a copy, then my office wants a copy, then the buyer wants a copy. So all it did was instead of the Home Inspector printing Two sets and me making a copy. Now I printed two set. So go figure:)))
