Duane Allman

Nov. 20, 1946 – Oct. 29, 1971

Duane Allman

Duane Allman was born in Nashville, Tennessee on this day in 1946. He would have been 62 today had he not tragically been killed in a motorcycle crash on his way to his home in Macon, Georgia.

Arguably the greatest slide guitarist to have ever lived, Duane Allman was best known for his role alongside his brother Greg, in the Allman Brothers Band. Duane Allman was also a well respected studio musician having recorded with the likes of Clarence Carter, Aretha Franklin, Otis Rush, and most notably with Eric Clapton

Duane Allman

Derek and the Dominoes, a band that featured Eric Clapton and Duane Allman, produced Layla, one of Rolling Stone Magazine's "Greatest Songs of All Time", clocking in at #27. Duane Allman discography

While Duane Allman's life was sadly cut short, he left an indelible mark on the music world.

So, today my fellow Rainers, take a moment out of your busy day to watch the attached video and when you’re done, go out into the world and…

Hi Craig. The impact that the Allman Brothers had on the music world is immense. What would rock and roll be without it? I still listen to the Fillmore and get goosebumps during Hot 'Lanta and Elizabeth Reed. I will never tire of listening to their music! -Ray

The Allman Brothers, in my car's cd player as we speak.  Music that will last forever, it never gets old.  Great post my friend.

Ray - It's so true. The Allman Brothers impact on the music world will last forever. The Fillmore LP is a classic. And Duane's influence will forever be replicated, but never duplicated.

Laura - No pretty faces. No MTV video. Just music. That's what it's all about when listening on the radio anyway. And the ABB could, and still does, ROCK ON!

Bruce & Mary - It's time to break out the old classics and get back to listening to all your your old favorites! Nothing today even compares.

Cecily - You're so welcome! Duane's legacy has to be remembered as so many of today's guitarists try to emulate his sound.

Alan - So glad you enjoyed the post and video. thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

Linda - Layla is an all time classic. I can only imagine what Duane would be playing these days had he lived beyond 25 years of age....

I had just started college fall of '71 and we got tickets to see the Allman Brothers down in Greeley on October 30 (as I recall). When we showed we found out he had just been killed the day or two before. Man were we bummed. I forget which band played that night but it didn't much matter. Midnight Rider & Sweet Melissa have been on my playlist for 30+ years. Thanks for the memories & the tribute.

Gene - OUCH! That must have hurt badly finding out about Duane just hours before going to the show. I've been listening to the Allman Brothers since the late 70's early 80's and I see them in concert every year. I never got to see Duane obviously, but his music has touched my soul and inspired me to write this blog.
