So you finally went out and got the Flip Cam !    Congratulations!

You went out and shot some video?  Good for you!

You found out that you can upload directly from the camera to YouTube?  STOP!!

Before you do, want to make a better looking video?

Want to do it quick and for free ?  ( did I just say the magic word? )

Have a PC?    Ever hear of Windows Movie Maker ?

It’s video editing software, it’s free, and the best part?

It’s already on your computer!

Here’s how to use it!

Now go out and start using that Flip Cam!

* I did this originally for FNT but thought it would be great to share with ActiveRain as well.

It is compatible with the MAC. I have used it on both my MAC and my PC. I actually prefer the MAC when using it.

Hey MAC Geeks! - (and I say that with much affection) If you have a MAC you have imovie - and that is much much better for video editing!

The other item I forgot to mention is that once you've done this, you can save the project.  Think of it as a template, then for tomorrows video you can just drop the new stuff into the middle and the transitions, titles, credits are already there.

Mike - Great tutorial. I never used Microsoft movie maker. Now I just need to figure how to get the movies off my JVC camcorder and into movie maker.

Thanks for the post Mike.  I use Windows Movie Maker with my camera videos and it is fun to work with. I have been thinking about getting a Flip cam.  Great information.

Susan Johnson - If you do get a flip - check out the Mino HD.  You just can't get a High Def Camera for that kind of $!  That said, the FLIP does have it's problems. For instance, I want external sound input.  I want backlight control and white balance.

Mike - great post.  Sometimes simple is good. In fact, in most cases, simple is good!  I use Windows Movie Maker to introduce kids to the wonders of video editing.  They love it.  And yes - one of the  main bennies... it's FREE!

Excellent information, Mike - and presented in a unique way, loved it!  I have owned one of these for a while but used it only for personal use.  Will have to give it a go.

Hi Mike!

Thanks for the update and tips on video editing with the Flip. I have one of these little puppies and was really enthusiastic about the idea of using it on property walk throughs and as a way of minimizing my often hard to read cryptic note taking. But the sound quality is so poor that it's not proving to be very useful -- at least for me. Do you think this is a "feature" of my particular unit? Any suggestions?

Mike, Great post.  I have been wanting to try my hand at editing a video.  I am going to have to dig out that program and try it out.

Mike- Great tut!  Yesterday I just figured out how to use the video screen capture with the www.JingProject.com  I loved everything about it except that I can only have 5 minutes of capture time.  BUT it was free.  What are my other options for having a longer capture time?  Also, Jing had me upload to screeencast.com.  It works fine for posting my 5 minute video here on the blog but for some reason they had problems at Advanced Access putting in the embed code.  I was on the phone with them for two hours and what it came down to was that it was not going to happen.  Where do you  upload your video to?  I liked your post very much and believe I have a lot to learn from you--you are subsribed to and I bookmarked this post!

Tami - To do this screen capture I used Camtasia. (Not Free) It's a product from TechSmith as is JING and Screencast and SnagIt.  Camtasia is a little like MovieMaker, a little like Jing, and then a whole lot more.

I originally uploaded to Screencast here: http://www.screencast.com/t/WoVkFaDE but for AR purposes I  wanted the Viddler Player.

Screencast can be free, but for my bandwidth I have to use the paid version.

Here's a picture from BlogWorld of the TechSmith Booth.  I kept dragging RE Bloggers over there and showing off their products.  (and NO I don't work for them LOL)

My Flip died. After working with customer service to make sure, they told us we were SOL. After the 90 day warranty it just becomes an expensive disposable. I'm pretty disappointed.
