Are you concerned about your health?  What about your weight?  Trying to maintain it?  Lose a pound or two?  Do you have more than that to lose?  (Public confessions not necessary here.)  If so, you may want to read further.

I recently was forwarded excerpts of an article from Men’s Health magazine titled, “Eat This, Not That: America’s Unhealthiest Drinks Exposed.

It’s about some of the worst drinks that we consume here in America.

The four that were highlighted for me were:

  • Glaceau Vitamin Water
  • Arizona Kiwi Strawberry
  • Pina Colada
  • Baskin Robbin’s Large Heath Bar Shake

Have you ever had any of those?

If so, do you have any idea what’s in them from a nutritional perspective?

How about just the basics… Calories, Sugar, and Fat?

For comparison, let's take a moment to look at the "nutrition" in a typical can of soda.  The typical can of cola has about 150 Calories, 40g of Sugar, and no Fat. How much is 40g of Sugar?  Let me give you a mental image: that’s 10 teaspoons full of sugar in a can!  For a better visual, the next time you make up some sweet tea, try adding 10 teaspoons of sugar.  Just seeing that much sugar dropped in is often enough to make someone swear off soda for at least a few days!

With that brief introduction, here’s what the article had to say about these four drinks:

Worst “Healthy” Drink Glaceau VitaminWater (any flavor; 20 oz bottle)

130 calories , 33 grams sugar

Vitamins and water might sound like the ultimate nutritional tag team, but what the label doesn’t say is that a bottle of this stuff carries nearly as much sugar and calories as a can of Coke. Makes sense, though, since this so-called functional beverage is produced by our often-sugar-crazy friends at The Coca-Cola Company.

Worst Juice Imposter Arizona Kiwi Strawberry (23.5 oz can)

360 calories , 84 g of sugar

These hulking calorie cannons (5 percent juice, 95 percent sugar water) are sold at gas stations and convenience stores across America for the low, low price of 99 cents, making this quite possibly the cheapest source of empty calories in the country.

Worst Smoothie Jamba Juice Peanut Butter Moo’d Power Smoothie (30 oz)

1,170 calories , 169 g sugars , 30 g fat

Jamba Juice calls it a smoothie; we call it a milkshake, with more sugar than an entire bag of chocolate chips. (Note: We’re pretty sure this is the drink Hollywood actors rely on when looking to put on 20 pounds for the role as a heavy!)

Worst Summer Cocktail Pina Colada

625 calories , 75 g sugars

Made from a blend of sickly-sweet pineapple juice and fat-riddled coconut milk, pina coladas may be this summer’s biggest beach-body saboteurs. In fact, the only redeeming part of this drink is the garnish — that lonely chunk of pineapple hanging from the rim. Try a lime daiquiri or a mojito instead and save up to 400 calories a drink.

The Unhealthiest Drink in America Baskin Robbin’s Large Heath Bar Shake (32 oz)

2,310 calories, 266 g sugar , 108 g fat (64 g saturated)

Let’s look at America’s Worst Drink in numbers:

73: Number of ingredients that go into this milkshake.

66: Number of teaspoons of sugar this drink contains.

11: Number of Heath Bars you would have to eat to equal the number of calories found in one Baskin Robbins Large Heath Bar Shake.

8-12: Average number of minutes it takes to consume this drink.

240: Number of minutes you’d need to spend on a treadmill burning it off, running at a moderate pace.

Do I need to detail why these have no business being in your diet if you’re concerned about gaining weight? They don’t fit into Weight Watchers, Take Shape for Life, Atkins, South Beach, and certainly not the wellness program my doctor said was the "perfect program": HealthPointe!

Makes me want to drink a bottle of filtered water and go for a walk just reading those figures!

Your right! There are so many things we drink and eat that are not very good for us. Our health is something we all need to be concerned about.

Holy Cow!!! (no pun intended) Nothing like the good ol' Stand-By WATER! I have a glass of it on my desk all the time...refill it throughout the day...I think the number of minutes you'd have to spend on the treadmill burning it all off...that's an EYE-OPENER there! Who wants to do that!

David your post is one everyone who has to watch their weight needs to read.  Especially at this time of year.

Thank you, Jubal, for your comment.  It's not just that we eat and drink things ghat aren't good for us.  We do that, so often, without even considering just how unhealthy those things are.  (And often, the marketing isn't helpful.)

Rebecca - thank you for your comment.  (I loved your "unintended" pun!)  Your water will really help.  It's the best thing for staying hydrated, which is good for all sorts of things.

The one that shocked me the most was the last drink.  Simply AMAZING!

Jake - thank you for your comment.  You're right about being particularly watchful at this time of the year.

Just thought I'd check out the nutrition in an eggnog.  Here's what I found. In 1 cup, there are 343 Calories, 34g of Carbs (21 in sugar alone - that's just over 5 tsp of sugar in a cup!), and 19g of Fat.

Stick to water! :-)

oh no! say it ain't so! I love eggnog (especially the new Pumpkin Spice flavor!!!) Oh well, at least it's just a holiday time drink around here. :o)

It's one thing to drink or eat unhealthy food knowingly.  Now that you know, you can make adjustments elsewhere to balance it out.  It's not a horrible thing to reward ourselves from time to time with a treat, is it?

Here's my newest FAVORITE DRINK:  Starbucks Orange Mango Banana Vivanno - a frozen banana, protein powder, 100% fruit juice, and ice.  Delicious, nutritious, cold and thick like a shake!  It's good for breakfast and/or a great pick-me-up in the middle of the afternoon between appointments!

It's listed as coming only in the Grande size - 16 oz, at 250 calories with 2% milk...  2 grams fat, 6 grams fiber, 32 grams sugar, 16 grams protein --  But here's something not everyone knows (my daughter works at Starbucks :) )  You can ask for it in the large cup (at no additional charge!) because their recipe actually makes more than will fit in the smaller size cup, and they're marketing to lots of people who like the 250 calorie number.  So for an additional 125 calories (even less if you switch to skim milk), and no additional cost, you can have the large -- DELICIOUS -- Vivanno shake!

Enjoy!

What really burns me is that it can say "Healthy" or whatever and be one of the worst things we could put in our bodies.  Of course, plain old water is still the best hydrating drink of all.  My son-in-law the dentist has finally convinced me to leave the bottled water in favor of tap water which includes flouride and does not come in non degradable plastic.

Thank you, Marian, for your comment.

I prefer to bottle my own filtered water.  Saves on bottles, saves on the cost of store-bought bottled water (in the long-run), and tastes MUCH better than tap water.  (A good filter gets rid of the chlorine and most any other bad stuff that might be in your water, while leaving in the good.)

I don't give into the hype of health drinks.  Water is all I need.  And not expensive either.

Angelia - Thank you for your comment.  You're absolutely right - water is enough, and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than virtually any other drink, and pretty readily accessible - at least here in the USofA! :-)
