Creativity is leading the way with some trends to battle rising vacancies for commercial property owners. With more and more empty commercial spaces for rent littering the retail landscape, not to mention the fact that many companies, including Linens N' Things and Wilson's Leather, are closing their doors, property owners are turning to unorthodox methods to bolster rents and acquire some non-traditional customers - advertisers!

Unique tactics include projecting 10-second ads on windows of empty stores to laminates attached to tables in eating and sitting areas, as well as parking lot floors. These increasing creative advertising trends are supporting both retailers and property owners. Malls are the largest users of this growing method; however, current market happenings are requiring this level of innovation for all owners of income producing properties.

Interesting idea, Pete. I may suggest that to a client of mine with a large empty prominent window downtown. He'll appreciate the thought, perhaps generate a bit of income, and build a relationship with another retailer in the area, all at the same time. A nice sign in the window will look better than the dark space...
