I don’t know how many of you are aware but April is Fair Housing Month. The Department of Housing and Urban Development released its Annual Report on Fair Housing earlier this month. According to this years report, agencies that monitor discrimination received 10,328 complaints last year. This is a record number and is nearly twice the number received in 1998! There were 9,254 complaints in 2005.

Considering the sheer volume of real estate transactions this is a pretty small number. However, HUD believes many complaints go unreported as people do not know where or how to file a complaint. It should be the goal in our industry to completely wipe out any form of discrimination. In that respect we have a ways to go yet.

It is interesting to note what the report said about the nature of the complaints. Discrimination based on disability received the highest number of complaints whereas race was a close second.

I just wanted to bring this to everyone’s attention so we can be aware of the current state if discrimination in our industry. I want to encourage everyone to do your part to make sure we in the real estate community can finally be free of any form of discrimination.

I for one just wish that the fair housing testers were monitored somehow and weren't just hired guns out looking for compensation.  Sad that we have to check behind people when it should be an honor to serve clients of all shapes and colors and sizes!

All i can say is one thing

Money is green

I do the same for anyone who comes to me. Im just looking to close a deal and i dont care about race, creed, sex or what sports team you root for.

Anyone who does any diff is a MORON

Great reminder. I completely agree with Dominick's comment - closing the deal regardless of any discrimination. It all goes back to the Golden Rule..."Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Hi Shailesh,  Who is discriminating?  Agents, buyer, sellers?  All of them?  Where is the biggest part of the problem?  I hadn't really thought about the who part until now, when you mentioned the numbers, and that disability was highest.  hmm, well I just thought about this, the problem may be in the property management world.

P.S. What Dominick said...except maybe the sports team, that may be pushing it a little too far!  :D  haha
