What if someone tells you that NOW is NOT the time to flourish? Not time to grow the business? What if this someone whom you look up to for love and support? This statement can be very devasting to your physche.

Unfortunately, the odds of success are against us and it is an unfortunate but real. 66% of small businesses remain in business after the 2nd year and 44% of them remain in business 4 years after that. The statistics of our real estate industry is even scarier. The failure rate of a first year rookie agent is 86%, only 7% will renew their license and 76% of the agents make less than $30,000 per year.

Building a small business is not easy. There are ample of unaccounted hours in the day. It is no night and day. It is not a matter of shutting the computer down at 5pm, pack up and leave the office. You may not bring the files back with you but you certainly bring your clients' transactions and growth strategies back with you in your head. Success may only be possible only after you have been stable for many, many years there after.

Recently, I had someone very close to me utter those very words. It feels as if my heart was stabbed a million times.

Jason Crouch posted a Song contest called, (Un)Inspired by a Song Contest. In his blog, he inspired to blog about a Song you can't stand to listen to even for a few seconds. In my mind, this statement is played over and over again like a bad song.

Gary Woltal is one of my many friends who understands my personal challenges playing Mommy and Realtor(R) roles at the same time. These two roles are both full-time jobs and equally as important for me. My role as my little Boomer's mommy is to lead him down the righteous path. "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you." Psalms 32:8. My other role is real estate as my ministry. This is where I am connected with people I am called to serve. Even until today, as my little precious Boomer is almost 14 months old, I navigate these waters, often still holding my head up high despite my difficulties.

I have learnt alot these past 14 months and my biggest lesson is about flexibility . It is not having to check off every single task on the to-do list. If I don't get to some of them, that's okay too. Understand that this is coming from someone who is highly-organized and almost a perfectionist in character. It was indeed a humbling journey. Today, it is as if acknowleding flexibility is not enough.

Despite what I heard, I want to let you know that Success knows no bounds. You are only limited by your imagination. I am only limited by my own imagination though I must now walk a very fine line between success at work and success at home. Do not let the news about the economy stop you. Do not let other agents at the water cooler talk you down. What other excuses would you let success come between you? If your loved ones utter those hurting words, yes, you can feel hurt a little. Yes, you may even cry a little. But as soon as you are ready, jump in the shower, take a very hot bath and wash it all away.

Though it is a difficult journey and the state of the economy is real, don't let it put a damper on your spirit. A successful entrepreneur must acknowledge these challenges, even embracing them, but don't let that get in your way.

Will Rogers said, "Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there".

Much to your success.

Loreena,

I don't know why someone would even think that now is not a time to grow - let alone tell this to you. This is a spectacular time to grow. :)

This is a challenging time -- it seems when things are more difficult we have the opportunity for more growth!  We have to think in different ways in order to make things happen!  Change is good, but it can be unnerving at times.  Here is to the success of the rainers!

Great fortunes are made during recessions and downturns and when everyone thinks it cannot be done...

Warren Buffet says that when the market is greedy, he is fearful and when the market is fearful (like now), he is greedy.  Hmmmm....

The first thing that comes to my mind is that you can look at the statistics...and believe them. OR...you can look at the promises of God...and believe HIM. I choose to believe HIM! He will guide you and lead you every step of the way. You are humble and submitted to His authority. You are NOT alone! You have touched so many people and shared so much. I'm so very thankful to know you and be your friend! GBU~

Loreena - Your post reminds me of one of my favorite quotes --

"You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true.  You may have to work for it however."  Jonathan Livingston Seagull

Pretty true stuff...!

Loreena,

I have a certain perspective on statistics. It's one I teach in my training classes. It doesn't matter if real estate has a 90% turnover rate as long as you're in the 10%. AND everyone chooses which catagory they're in. I know a lot of moms in real estate. I admire all of them. My kids are grown so I don't have all the daily things to go through. Plus, I know, right or wrong, more gets dumped on mom than dad. Glad to see you're standing strong.

Loreena those are really scary stats.

Now is the perfect time to grow, because it means we will thrive when the market recovers. Building a business is these troubled times and nurturing it to success will plant the seeds for it to grow exponentially in the future. We are in tough times, but if you can make it thru this market you will thrive in the future market.

Loreena - I too understand the challenges of being a full time Mother and full time professional. Although my daughters are older (12 and 18), they still need me, and their needs must come first. And there really is nothing more important than your children. However, in this business and as parents - you hit the nail on the head, about being flexible.

I probably did not write this blog very well, did not present its main point like it should.

I understand the statistics. They are real but it doesn't scare me. I am past that.

But my point is, how can you function, keep doing what you do when your core support team tells you to hold off on growing because time to flourish is NOT now - because you are a parent?

No matter how close someone is to you,  that person may not understand how you operate!  I remember my dad telling me not to quit my steady job to go out on my own in real estate.  I listened to his advice and then made my own decision.  I went out on my own and have never regretted that decision.  That experience gave me even more confidence to listen to my own self.

I still seek opinions, but since I have to live with my choices, I make my own decisions.  I think that should apply to us all.

Thanks for this post.  Since I have been home with our children for the past five years, we were already used to living off of my husband's income alone.  So now, whatever else I bring in is "gravy".  I'm in this for the long haul!
