Because so many of you are praying, I wanted to give you all an update on what we have found out about John, the man who ran into my husband, RenRed, Saturday morning.  You can read the original post to get the whole story.

RenRed is doing amazingly well.  I would have had him stay home from work a few more days, but you know how some men are....  The doctor told him to use his leg, so he went to work Tuesday morning.  Physically, he's getting better every day.  He's still very tender emotionally, and still upset with the system that lets drunks/druggies drive around on our streets. Our car

Again, thank you for all your concern and caring.  Your prayers mean so much to us.  Here is what has been going on:

I've never lived in a small town, so the interconnectedness of small town Texas is new to me.  It truly is where everybody knows everybody.

The guy who towed our car knows John, having had to pull him out of a ditch when he was using a tractor to travel up and down the road and managed to turn it over.

A bystander took pictures which were published in the town's online newspaper.  Would they give us her email?  Sure.  She sent us the other pictures she had taken at the scene.  She said that John's mother was worried about RenRed and wanted his phone number or address.  She had had no news about what had happened to the person her son hit.  RenRed gave his number to pass along.

A colleague of RenRed's made a call at the plant located in the town, and the workers there were still talking about the accident.  RenRed's friend told them he knows RenRed.  They told him that the doctors were going to have to amputate John's arm and leg.

Hearing that, rather than wait for John's mother to call, RenRed found her phone number online and called her.  She was genuinely relieved to here that he is okay.  He ended up talking to her for over an hour.  She had done everything in her power to keep him out of that car.  Early Saturday morning when she left the house John was sober and she thought the car had no gas.  She had checked the guage and it registered empty.  She left with her sister on a shopping trip to the nearest town.  They actually saw the police car and ambulance, sirens blaring, as they headed down the road.  She had no idea it was her son.

John's car after jaws of lifeShe told RenRed that John has a broken left leg that required surgery, a broken wrist, a broken jaw, and tomorrow the doctors will do reconstructive surgery on his face. He may have to have his leg amputated, but the doctors think now that he will live.

The state trooper told RenRed that the reason it has taken the doctors so long to do anything about his leg is that he already has pins and rods in it from a motorcycle accident.  Yes, he was drunk.  The trooper also told him that his preferred method of anesthetization is not alcohol, but pills.  He's been in and out of mental hospitals for the past 15 years, so he has easy access to free medication.

The guy he got the car from also has four DUIs.  The car actually belongs to a third party whose last name we recognize.

Punishment for 3rd offense DUI in Texas is 2-10 years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine.  Or evidently if you live in Shelby County, six months probation.

We are grateful that John will live.  He has a long road to physical recovery ahead of him.  His spiritual recovery is less certain and may take longer.  We can only pray.

RenRed is going to the hospital Saturday to meet John's mother.  I am hoping to be able to go with him, but I have showings - a good problem to have, but I would like to meet her, too.  No word yet on the insurance payout.

Melody, you're right about that!  And even when the physical injuries are healed and another car is bought, the emotional baggage will still be there for my husband.  Thanks for you prayers.

Sharon, I laughed when a friend saw the pictures of the cars and said, "I DO BELIEVE GOD HAS JUST SHOWED OFF!" in His protection of them.

C, thanks.  That means a lot.

Liz, thank you.  It really is incredible.  We;re finding out it's not something that you just walk away from and forget.  We're gaining a new perspective on what it means to be an accident victim.

Alexander (Alex?), Wow, I appreciate it.  It really is a praise report for RenRed, and I hope eventually from John, too.

You and RenRed are such amazing people!!!! I can only imagine the pain that Mother must be going through. As a parent we do everything in our power to raise good responsible children to become good adults and sometimes no matter how hard we try, something like this happens. You are sooo kind to be helping her with her grief after all you have been through!!!!

Happy Friday!!

What incredible pictures. I hope you and your family can survive this physically and mentally. I think it would be great for the doctors to put an extra screw in the jaw that would extend into the brain and block the thing that is releasing endorphins saying that he needs drinks and drugs. THat would be a great fix!!!! With all of the technology, you would think that something like that would be possible. There would be some lost jobs, but also a lot of saved lives!!

Hey, Heather. Thanks for updating the AR family. I am so glad to hear that RenRed is doing so much better and that you both are meeting with John's mother. What a wonderful thing to be there for her. God Bless, Jim

This truly is frustrating for me to read.

The fact that this guy is out on the streets.

The fact that his Mom did not hide or take the keys with her.  Yes, I know parents can't control their "kids" but this seems like common sense to me, epseically knowing what her son is capable of doing.

I am so glad that RenRed is gonig to be ok.

I just wish the system would not allow this to happen.

What is with contacting the mother of an adult? The adult is responsible for his actions. That sounds more like harrasment, or just to make her feel guilty?

Chuck

Chuck-You do not seem to understand the pain and guilt this mother must be feeling. It is a blessing that Heather and RenRed have forgiveness in their hearts.

I am sorry if this is none of my business to answer, but I do not want to see anything you two do be attacked!!!

You are both amazing people!!

Heather, I missed your original post on this and I am truly sorry for what your family, as well as the drunken driver's family, are having to suffer through.  I think taking a long weekend and having a trusted colleague take your showings so that you could be with your husband would be good for both of you.  You're in my thoughts...

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.  May your husband continue to improve.

Lori, thank you for your kind words - and for defending me.

Jason, how funny.  That would be a nice addition to his surgery.  A surgical cure for alcoholism.

Jim, John, Castellum Realty, Margaret, and Kim, thank you for checking in and for you well wishes.

Mark, that is my husband's frustration as well.  He's trying to find out how to keep him off the streets, although in all honesty, he may be a complete invalid when this is all over.

Christine, thank you for the suggestion.  Sounds good to me.  Going on the showings in the morning may actually be the best thing to do, but I will take advantage of the fact that hubby is off all next week.

Chuck, yes, John is an adult and he is responsible for his actions.  That's why I can't fault his mother for not being able to stop him.  She is the one who wanted to talk to us, not the other way around.  She wanted to know my husband's condition.  After seeing her son, she was afraid RenRed was dead.

We wanted to assure her that he is going to be okay, and that we don't hold any hard feelings against her.  She was very relieved to hear from RenRed and very glad that he had called.  I don't see where you get harassment out of that.  Tell me where you're coming from.

Heather, thank you for updating us.  Actually I admire your grace towards this person. He definately needs help and in house treatment to get hold of his problems and make good decisions. Jail is not  the answer so I will pray that he can be sent to a drug, rehab place and stay until he can get to the root of his problems. Most alchol and drugs at this level is self-medicating fo the pain they are going through.

Missy, I agree about the self-medicating.  It may be a long time before he is able to get around.  I believe he will be facing more surgery on his leg.

Heather, I agree with what Mel Bottling said about how life can change in an instant and all your priorities get scrambled around. This is a horrific crash based on those photos. The offending person definitely needs help with his problems. Hopefully everyone will stay on the roads to recovery from all aspects of this incident.

Heather,

That is amazing to me that they let this guy stay out on the streets!  Innocent people have been touched by this irresponsible, mentally ill man.  The justice system needs to lock these people up for good!

Cat, we just cannot condemn a person who is so obviously messed up.  Doing that would end up hurting us worse than him.  I'm glad RenRed can forgive him, so that he can move on to other things.

Charles, we did not have the opportuniy to visit today.  We will try tomorrow.

Monika, Ellie, Gary, and Tracy, that is what RenRed is focusing on now.  Making sure the system doesn't fail the citizens this time around.  His beef is not with John, it's with the good ol' boys who just keep slapping his hand.

Marian, neither of us ended up going.  It's not the right time.  John is still in pretty bad shape.  We will be going to visit with his mother and sister, though.
