Do you love this business? Are you at the office right now because you are excited about the opportunities that are at your feet today?

I don't quite understand why, but it seems time and time again I hear the agents I work with complaining: "it wasn't worth my time", "I am only getting $300.00", "What for???", "Why should I do this?", "These people are time consuming."

The list goes on and I could easily include 100+ other excuses or comments about how they are unhappy or how they only want to sell $1,000,000+ property.

What I am about to say may come as a shock to you; or you may have heard it 1,000 times already. "love what you do and the money will follow."

Sometimes we forget why we chose to get into real estate. I know that I absolutely love this business. I love working with people, I love the adventure. I have fun going into the office and working with other agents. But, I also understand that this is a business. If I didn't love this, if I felt like this was a job, I would probably do something else.

----

EVERYTHING YOU DO IS WORTH YOUR TIME. If you are spending time doing something that isn't helping your business, then yes, it is a waste of time (solitare on the computer, watching tv, running personal errands).

If you are in front of people with an opportunity to meet a potential customer or client then why are you complaining? Of course if you are showing a rental for free and have another client who wants to buy a $200,000 property, then that may not be the best use... BUT, you need to adjust.

Put together a priority list. With the economy the way it is, you must keep moving forward. If you have no business, get find new business; but DO NOT complain if somethings small comes along... because before you had nothing, now you have something.

I am NOT sorry for being extremely irritated by people who say "it's not worth my time".

If YOU are sooo valuable that you can't handle more business, then refer it out. Or don't take the project on.

.... On a brighter note...

It is FRIDAY. The weekend is almost here. Make it happen and have a great day!

I like your blog, and  I agree totally.  I find the agents that are complaining are the ones that just started in real estate and can not afford to pay the fees.  Of, course, they should have thought about the up front fees before starting the business.  Right now with the real estate market being low, it is very hard for beginners.  I find this is a great time to get more education and of course, use the AR network.

I so agree with you.It is all about attitude. I choose how I spend my time. If I am working I am doing what I love. If Iam playing, even better. But life is toooo short to not enjoy every moment. I honestly choose to not be around negative people. That too is a choice. I weed them out of my life. Now I am not rude to them, I just keep them at a distance.

Happy Friday!!

Rebecca- This is a business, and whether it is being in a real estate or being a lawyer, there are still fees that need to be paid. Now is the time to position ourselves to be front runners when this market turns around.

Lori- Maybe it is just me, but it seems when we keep the negative people at a distance... life seems to be so much more fun! We have one chance, one opportunity: now is the time to make it happen!

I've been incredibly busy this quarter ---- and it's great. I tell people that when I'm busy, that means I have clients.

Reminds me to keep in mind that Customers are not an interruption of your work, they are the cause of it.

On the other hand...I do have a short sale listing that I am promoting. However, the follow up part of it will take a lot of time, considering there are two loans on the property. So I farmed out that piece of dealing with and following up with the lenders to Mortgage Resolutions Services. The referral fee, to me, is worth it.

This way, I get to enjoy doing the other things I like to do, and not be too stressed doing things that are not so much fun (like following up with lenders).

I agree, if you love what you do it shows.  Remember every time you meet with a client whether it is to show a rental, sell a lot, or sell a high end home you are getting your name out to the public.  That person may not purchase anything from you but if you do a great job they will tell their friends and that is how you grow a business.  It takes a couple years in this business to get the kind of referrals that keep you going in slow times.

Great blog and I totally agree.  You have to love your work, or you won't do a good job.

Pacita: Great point. One of the things we emphasize to our agents is delegation. It is tough to be GREAT at everything. But, if you can afford to find help on the small things, it will allow you more time to do what you love.

Kathy: What you just wrote is exactly what I am trying to get across to my agents!!

Mary: Thank you for your reply. I appreciate all of the feedback!

In the New York Real Estate market we have the sales market and the rental market.  Our average sales price is usually over a million and the commission will be around $30,000.  Obviously thats a huge payday.  You could do a rental for a $2,000/month studio and make $3400.  A lot of agents turn down renters all the time and refer them out.  I will take these renters all day long.
