Well, that's what the competitors think anyways.  I tend to disagree.

See, this is a time of change.  A changing market, changing bank accounts (boo!) changing Presidents, changing options for financing, and, LOTS of real estate office changing.  I myself started off the year with a brokerage change.  This was NOT an easy decision, but one that HAD TO BE MADE, for the sake of my business, and frankly, my sanity.

So I looked into lots of different companies.  And the one I REALLY had an interest in, that's the one I heard the most horrible things about.  Including; the broker has horns and a tail.  Many, many people (admittedly, former broker and associates) told me the office I was considering should be the LAST place on earth I would ever work for.  I was warned to take a good look at the reputation of the office, and the agents.  So I did.  I watched, and I interviewed, and I made a very deliberate decision.  And I still went there.

Its been almost a year now, and to my delight, the experience has been nothing but positive.  Oh, I wont lie and say sales have been off the charts.  The market here in Ohio has taken a hit much like the rest of the nation.  But the people? Really welcoming and professional.  And my broker?  If she has horns and a tail, she's done an awfully good job of hiding them.

Which leads me to why I bring this up...this evening I met up with a really sweet husband/wife team from a competing office.  They have been considering switching over to mine, but had heard a lot of horror stories about the "reputation" of our agents and broker, and wanted to get the scoop from me.

Seems they have been told the broker bears a certain likeness to the devil...

                                                                                   Devil

I really don't see the similarity.

This just has me thinking about the lengths some people will go to in order to keep agents within their walls.  I know, I know, good agents, REAL GOOD AGENTS, are hard to come by, but to using fear as a tactic to keep agents in their place really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.  Whats worse is the knowledge that at one time, I was that gullible agent.  Wanting so badly to make a change, yet so very afraid due to the horrific stories I had heard from my then-broker and colleagues.  It embarrasses me that I could be so easily influenced.

The only thing I could think to tell this husband/wife team sitting in exactly the same seat I was in a year ago is this..."If your current broker has nothing better to do than bad mouth other Realtors and other companies, it certainly speaks volumes to his own character and business values."  There's REAL ESTATE to be done out there people!!!  And this guy just sits around talking trash about competitors??

Hopefully they will be joining our ranks soon, working hard, learning much, and not tripping over any tails at all!

I am very lucky I have a great broker. She is always there for me and the agents in the office.

I am glad to hear your move worked out positively.

I hope that the truth gets out and you certainly can help people find the truth abotu your  broker.  Good luck to you and hopefully the market will come back soon!

You know Kelley, even here in Colorado I too have found myself in a similar situation.  I made the leap of faith from a "heavy hitter" company to a more boutique agency...and I love it.  The only thing missing from this office is the BIG PAY OUTS to the company.  I get the support I need, I don't have to listen to all the drama every time someone chooses to leave (which I have yet to see anyone leave) and my Broker hears our concerns and makes decisions based on our needs.

Times are changing and honestly I hope the days of "back slapping" and "coffee talk" are over.  I treat my business associates with the same respect that I had for my co-workers when I worked for corporations.  I listen to constructive criticism and share my thoughts freely when someone wants my opinion.

I hope the days of stepping on the backs of hard working agents to climb to the top are forever gone.  I saw it a lot in my parents generation and it always left me feeling like no matter how hard you worked, if you weren't prepared to knife your co-worker in the back...you wouldn't succeed.

I still know agents that think they are in the CIA, everything is top secret and the only opinion that counts is their own...I know in my heart that these agents just have a lack of confidence...it is sad that society has made it appear that if your not "tough as nails" then your a weakling.

My Grandfather always told me that you're never to old to learn something new...and over the last 30 years I can see that he was right.

Funny how so much of our business is driven by tearing down...or spreading rumours......other people instead of building up or being proud of what we DO have! Glad to see you didn't listen....and are better off for it!

Hi Sandy -  glad to hear you like your Broker.  It makes all the difference in the world.  It has for me.  I have been more excited this year about real estate than I ever have in my past 6 years in the bus.

Hi Joan - That was part of what made me finally decide to come here.  So many people were saying things about the awful reputation of agents in my office.  I KNOW I'm a good person (for the most part LOL), and I figured.. "Well, even if its true, I know who I am and maybe I can get in there and help change the image"  I guess the fact that agents from other companies feel comfortable enough to ask me for my opinions means I'm doing something right.  Good luck in your market too!  Lets hope 2009 is a GREAT ONE!!

Richard - Well, she CAN be a bear sometimes...when it comes to getting the deal done and making her clients happy.  I think she would even agree to this resemblance.

Kim - I hear what you are saying.  The CIA comment made me think...The husband/wife team I met with last night told me that if they move, they will have to go in the office at 3 in the morning to load up their stuff so the broker doesn't "catch" them.  WOW!  What does that say about the broker??

Loren - thanks!  Agents thinking of changing it up should take a long hard look at how things are done where they are...Do they spend time knocking down others or building their business?  It says a lot about the office culture.  Personally, real estate is dramatic enough.  I'd rather spend my time around people who want to help me be better, not knock down others!
