Via Hal Goodtree - Web 2.0 for Business:

Our roads and bridges may be crumbling, but our information infrastructure is growing like kudzu. One of the most interesting new developments is the expansion of advertising opportunities on Facebook.

THE FIRST STEP

The first thing to do if you want to advertise on Facebook is get yourself a profile. It's free. Ads are used to promote Facebook Pages. Pages are associated with your profile. You can build an unlimited number of pages on Facebook. But you can only have ONE profile. The rules and regs are very specific. You cannot create a second identity for your business.

MAKING AN AD

Once you have a profile and have created a page for your business, you're ready to advertise. Select Ads & Pages from the menu of the right side of your Home.

On the top right, select Create an Ad

.

The process involves four simple steps (and is a wonder of user-friendly design):

  • Select a target (where do you want the ad to link)
  • Create the ad (text and picture)
  • Choose a target demographic
  • Set a budget (how much per day, how much per click)

STEP 1 - TARGET

When viewers click on your ad, they are taken somewhere on the web. In step one, you selected where you want to send your traffic.

You can send your audience to an external web page, a Facebook Page (as we've selected) or you can copy an existing ad.

STEP 2 - CREATE AN AD

Creating an ad is as easy as writing a headline and a little body copy, then uploading a picture.

Help is always available on the right side of the page.

STEP 3 - DEMOGRAPHIC

Here's where it gets interesting. Choose the region or city you want to reach. Add keywords that target your audience. Watch the audience size change as you alter the variables.

STEP 4 - BUDGET

Advertising is a relatively new thing on Facebook. Rates are pretty cheap and the site is not yet over-run with competing promotional messages. $25 gets you started.

Once you create a campaign, you can edit the budget and schedule. It's a little counter-intuitive, but works ok in practice.

REVIEW YOUR CAMPAIGN

You get one last chance to review the campaign.

Change the ad or place the order.

WHY FACEBOOK IS A GOOD PLACE TO ADVERTISE

Lots of people want you to advertise with them online. What's different about Facebook is that it's like being invited to advertise in someone's home.

The process is easy. The rates are cheap. The channel is relatively uncluttered. Why not give it a try?

I didn't realize that we could advertise on Facebook as something similar to pay per click. Thanks for the information.

I've set up on Facebook and the only thing that has happened is 2 of my kids "friended" me. I thought I was their friend anyway.

We recently created our own Social Advertising site for Myrtle Beach SC.  How has your experience been with this kind of advertising?

Facebooks is definitely not for kids any longer, and it's growing at light-speed...now more than ever. My only issue with advertising on the site is how they target. I'm in NJ, but each time I log-on to my FB page I only see ads for realtors in states 1000+ away from where I am locating. That's not very efficient.

i use facebook ads, not sure if it has much of a financial benefit, but it is cheap cheap ppc advertising.

Thanks for the information.

With that said I am seeing something that is VERY disturbing. Put your listings on, that is great, but PLEASE stop putting pictures of your or other peoples children on the internet. I understand that many of you socialize on the net and start to forget that the world is watching. You are putting your children in danger. Stop and think about it. You want the whole world to know who you are. You are trying to market yourself. That is great. BUT   BUT do you want the world to know what your child looks like and where they may be found?  Well if you do I am not sure what to say to you but PLEASE don't put your friends kids up there. Pictures from school groups or ballet should not be posted.

Eugene -

Would be curious as to the response you have been getting from your Facebook ads.  Any convertable leads?

Please let us all know.

Have had sucess generating some leads with Google PPC, but conversion was poor.

I would also be interested to hear how successful your facebook advertising has been.  I have created a profile and started inviting friends, even had a few people say nasty things about how facebook is not a marketing tool, etc.

Eugene,

GREAT blog!

I went to the profile page...... I do not have Ads and Pages under my applications.  Did you have to do something to get the download of Ads and Pages?  Do you remember how you obtained that application?  I have been looking and cannot find where one would get that.

Thanks!
