I hate being cold.  I hate high energy bills.  Having been a single mother living on commission (can any of you imagine that?), I've long been an advocate of conservation,  I recently noticed that my two children have grown up as friends of our planet, and consequently save...energy and their money.

I never leave a room without considering if I should turn off the lights. If it's going to be more than a few moments before I return,  I switch off the lights. Before I leave my house to go to work, I adjust the thermostat so that my empty house isn't needlessly heated or cooled in my absence. 

Leading by example has worked well for us.  If it becomes second nature to be conservative, and you explain what and why you take those steps, those around you will follow along.  And we'll all be better because of it.
