Brunswick, Georgia will be in the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing Program (whose goal is to improve housing in Georgia) for the next 3 years - named along with 4 other cities in Georgia. This program is designed to help cities identify their housing needs while providing technical assistance and housing expertise while enhancing local competence in housing programs.  Brunswick will receive assistance in creating a comprehensive housing plan while learning lessons from other cities that have already benefited from the program.  Georgia's Department of Community Affairs The University of Georgia and the Georgia Municipal Association collaborate to make this possible for cities in Georgia.

Eric VanOtteren, director of Brunswick Community Development allows that the Community Housing Program is going to help us achieve what we desire to do by using our ideas but with help so we don't "reinvent the wheel".   This plan will look at all of the city's housing options including single family housing multi-family housing as well as public assisted housing.  Then recommendations will be made as to what needs to be done. 

The networking between Brunswick and other cities that have participated in this program is a large part of the success.  These cities include Valdosta, Waycross, Thomasville, Sylvester and Cartersville. A housing task force, formed in September, will work with these agencies to supply housing that meets the needs of the community.
