The Purpose In What We Do

By
Real Estate Agent with Trademark Realty Group of Palm Coast

When I entered into Real Estate as a career and asked others why they chose this business I often heard, "To make money."  I have to tell you, money was an attraction of mine to, but not the sole purpose.  So I spoke with an ex-manager of mine about this and he made some great points which have driven much of what I am doing today with everything I do.  As he had said, "Any sales-related environment is about serving others.  Everything you do in your business should be centered on serving your customers.  If you can do that, you will be successful."

So how does that statement apply to all of the "things" and "stuff" we do.  Things like technology, websites, blogs, education, yada yada yada?  Well, let's take a look at some of those things:

  1. Education - This is the basis of everything else.  You can't provide any adequate level of service if you don't know what you are doing.
  2. Technology - We often look at the technologies available to us as better ways to serve our own needs.  Actually, the ability for us to be more efficient in our business processes allows us to provide better levels of service to our customers and allow us to reduce alot of those traditional stressors associated with Real Estate transactions for both buyers and sellers.  Technology also allows us to identify more accurate listing prices and market listings in a much more effective way for sellers.  We can reach out to much larger areas with beautiful presentations like never before.  All of which is providing the best level of service to the customer who entrusted you with selling their property.
  3. Websites - I'm going to mess with some heads here, I don't view my website as a "lead-generation machine".  Yes, lead-generation is a function . . . but not the only function.  My website also serves customers with providing not information about the area but also valuable services such as mortgage calculators, links to area websites and information, utilities connection, so forth and so on.  I (with help from my husband) have layed the site out through the customer's eyes taking into account internet-browsing behavior and what others have often said they want from a Real Estate website.
  4. Blogs - This new-found area is a great way to provide information and advice out to large groups.  It's a great way to serve the local community with news and information related to Real Estate and allow them to interact through comments.

The list can go and on.  My point is that any business has to have purpose, and every business makes money.  Money is a purpose which is selfish in an unselfish profession.  Genuine purpose leads to vision which leads to a planning and strategies which leads to success.  For me, my purpose is simple . . . to assist sellers and buyers with their Real Estate needs working to make Real Estate fun and exciting the way it should be.  These are the some of the biggest and most important purchases for customers, and it's also a very exiciting time.  They trust me enough to assist them, I owe them the best I can give them.  Because when it comes down to it, I don't exist in this business without the customer.  So it's not about me, it's about serving them.

While I do like a good lead generating machine, success in real estate ultimately comes down to personal contacts and relationships. One of my favorite sayings is 'Do the right thing and the money will follow.'

Like your point of view.  I hate it when people call the buyers and sellers that I meet through the internet leads.

Hi Kathy - your post says it all, and so well, too.  It IS all about the people we work with and for - as you said, without them, where would we be?  We owe it to all of our clients to give them the very best we can - we would expect nothing less ourselves if we were in their position.

Great post, and congratulations on your gold star!

Nor do I like it when a client is referred to as a "file", or "number".  I just hate it when I'm referred to that way.  Congrats on the star!

Good morning Kathy, Very well thought out and so very true.  It is very easy to get caught up in the "Me" part of our world and I have said that often.  Those of us that view this business of Real Estate as  a "Service Industry" will always to well.  Have  a wonderful weekend and take care.

Hi Kathy great post - You are sooooooo right, real estate is about the people.  For too long a lot of praise has been given to those that make the big bucks, not those real estate heroes that jumped thru hoops to help a buyer or seller get what they want.  Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with those that make a lot of money, I just don't think those that do it at the expense of the people they are suppose to serve should not be rewarded.

I tend to agree with you. Frankly, I want to be successful enough at whatever I do that I can live how I want. Having said that, I have been in the business for a while and came to see that we offer an important service for folks making the biggest investment/purchase of their lives. At the same time, we should be looking at ourselves as protecting our clients from the scores of folks out there in this business that are not at th level we would like them to be.

Well said!  We are in a service industry and in serving our customers we grow.  The money is secondary even though it's necessary to live.  We never put it first.  Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Great post. Have you read The Purpose Driven Life? I think you'd enjoy if you haven't - I believe the author is Ken Blanchard. Building your business from the perspective of your customer is a guaranteed method for success. One of my mentors used to say, "if you give it away in slices it will come back to you in loaves, therefore your focus in business should be giving away the slices and let the getting take care of itself" as it inevitabley will.

The "stuff" we do every day does seem to take over our business, if not our life.  Sometimes I have to ask how it fits into my plan.  If it doesn't, it's expendable!
