It is with sadness, but not surprise that I share the announcement that the Ann Arbor Public Library is postponing the rebuilding of the downtown library.  This is a great plan and very exciting but I must say I'm happy that the board has realized we can not afford this building at this time.

The plan is wonderful, exciting but very expensive and we are going to wait until our market turns around before they move forward.  The public library will continue to support the downtown library so we don't need to worry about failure for our vibrant downtown in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  It will remain a wonderful place to visit and in the future there will be exciting plans for the downtown library.

Wow, I hadn't heard, good call. We do need another one, but they are wise the timing is just not right for the citizens who will support it.

I totally agree that they have to wait and can't do it now but plan for the future.  Thanks Missy.

I would love to see a new library in Ann Arbor with underground parking - why not a subway stop as well!  I think if the financial markets had not tanked 50 percent, they might have even had the money to make it happen!

Ann Arbor has the best library system around and I have great respect for their decision makers.  The new library branches in Ann Arbor are so much fun and their interlibrary loan systems works like a charm.  One of the nicest things about Ann Arbor is their library system!

Karen, our public libraries are so important a part of our cities.  We have one in downtown DC that is just amazing, if not a little funky due to limited funding.

Andy, you are so right.  If our stock market hadn't tanked I agree it would still be a go.  I can't wait until they build the new one...well yes I can wait and I will wait.  The market will turn around.

Patricia, I would think DC would have a great system.  They should!!  It surpises me that it is limited funding.  I bet the funding would be better if Congress used that library for sources.  Maybe they do, I could be wrong.

Karen - There have been several projects in my area put on hold as well.  Like you, I am happy to see that they have decided to do so.......they'll still happen one day, just not today.

We've been trying to build a new downtown library since about 1561. I think we've spent a few gazillion dollars studying the situation so far. Why we don't just build it I don't know.
