You can not buy this, steal it or fake it; you absolutely have to earn it:  RESPECT!

***Please play this video while you're reading the blog!

One of my clients always commands respect from everyone.   I have represented him, his family and friends through many transactions.  When he says "jump", I make it happen, regardless of how busy I am.

This man has the respect of his family, his friends and his associates.  When he speaks, people listen.  What does he do that garners him this coveted place of honor?

1.  He is ALWAYS very respectful of everyone.  Regardless of status or position, he always treats every person with the utmost respect.  His sentences are punctuated by "Please", "Thank you", "May I" and "I appreciate it".

2.  He never demands anything; he always asks for it politely.

3.  His word is golden.  If he says he'll do something, he always does.  He never makes promises he can not keep.

4.  He is loyal to his family, friends and associates.  He shows his loyalty by always being there for them, whether it's with advice or special favors.  If you need something, he will do his best to help you.

5.  He is always respectful of my time and makes sure I get paid.  He never asks me to discount my services.  He values my professionalism.  He is always fair in his dealings; he never expects "to steal" a property, only to garner a good deal.

6.  He never talks badly about anyone.  When he has nothing good to say about someone, he says nothing.

Ultimately, He commands respect by always giving it.

What a good lesson to learn for so many people...

I have no idea how this got 71 views, for I had it as a draft for about a day. Did I really look at it THAT often?

Mirela, very nice post. While a appreciate a person who commands respect, I am not sure that I would drop efforts that I am working for one client for another. Possibly I misunderstood that part. One must first give respect in order to get respect. It sounds as if your client does just that.

You have 2 number 5's, just so you know.  Good post though and a good reminder.  In this tough market, your reputation as an agent means everything.  If you have integrity and a good rapport with others your listings will get shown and sold if not, well, I hope I'm never part of that crowd (AND KNOW THAT I NEVER WILL BE)!

Mirela- he sounds like a great man to know, and work for.   We can all learn from people like him.  It sounds like he leads by example.

Tim and Pam: Good point! No, I wouldn't drop another client to service him, and he woudn't want me to do that. Luckily I have a team, so I can make it happen - I can practically be in more places at one time by having licensed assistants.

Great example of how people should act. That's the way my mother and father raised me. It's also the guy my wife married. He needs to re-examine his self for some of the ways he has reacted to outside influences during the last couple of years.

Robert: Tough parenting! Don't worry, no matter what you do, they won't like it, or agree with you. I told my kids that they don't have to like me right now (during their teenage years); they just HAVE to listen to me. I don't have to be their best friend right now; only their boss... Yup! Parenting is a tough gig...
