Wolf Creek Weimaraner Rescue, Inc.

In addition to the University of Tennessee, the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, and the Ijams Nature Center, Knoxville is home to several animal rescue organizations. In this post, I want to highlight the good work that the volunteers do at the Wolf Creek Weimaraner Rescue, Inc. This organization is a 501(c)(3) so all donations, which are the majority of the groups operating budget, are tax deductible.

This dynamic organization found it roots in the heart of two people who were dedicated to rescuing dogs. In the eight years since its inception, the Wolf Creek Weimaraner Rescue, Inc. has grown to a dedicated group of 45 volunteers. During that time this organization has saved an estimated 250 animals from abuse and possible destruction. This organization and its volunteers and foster families have come to know and understand this breed whose popularity has been spreading in recent years. The popularity of the breed is a double edged sword. On the one hand it is good that more people are wanting this type of dog. At the same time, many irresponsible back yard breeders and puppy farms are cranking these puppies out with little regard for the breeding mother's health, the genetics of the offspring, and overpopulation in general.

The goal of this organization is not to end breed specific breeding. In fact this organization explicitly supports the ethical breeding of Weimaraners from genetically sound animals. They do emphasize that ethical breeding includes the education of potential pet owners about the breed and a commitment to honor all health guarantees.

If you are interested in donating money or your time to this worthwhile organization, click HERE.

See the picture to the left, that is Emmy. She is currently with her foster family but is just waiting to be placed with her loving forever family. If you want to read about her specifically, just click her photo. If you would like to see and read about all the Weimaraners that are currently looking for their forever families, click HERE. If you think that being a parent for one of these loving and beautiful creatures is something you might like to become, you can e-mail the rescue group at info@wcweimrescue.org  and you can learn about the adoption process by clicking HERE.

Rich - that was my dream dog... and then a pit mix abused puppy demanded I rescue him, and so it goes... It truly does change the fate of a breed when they become popular, and usually not in dogs' favor.  Great thing you are doing here with this blog.

BTW: The top pic has about the saddest puppy face I've ever seen, next to my oldest. :-)

Wow, Rich!  Weimeraners are such beautiful animals.  And SMART!  If I had room in this house for one more dog I'd have one in a heartbeat.  I've always loved them.

Thanks for the info on the rescue.  I'm bookmarking that!

Hi Rich This sounds like a good rescue group.  I have been supporting a similar Poodle rescue group.  We all need to do more and stop buying from pet stores nd newspaper ads.

So I had comments to all of you but of course there was some frustrating and all too frequent problem posting! Breathe in...Breathe out...

Inna - Fate really has a way of bringing together those things that need each other most; your pit mix and your family. There are so many that just want to be loved that it simply breaks your heart. Giving an animal the loving home it deserves is an incredible gift for all parties involved.

Carol - They have the most beautiful eyes and very playful and gentle temperament.

Gayle - They are very dedicated. It is hard to get people to stop doing what many of us were raised to do, buy pets from newspapers and pet stores. There are even songs about buying from pet stores; think "How Much Is That Doggy In The Window".

James - These animals and the rescue organizations who make it their mission to help them need and deserve our support. People leaving their animals behind because they lost their home is one of my biggest pet peeves!

Hey Rich, if anything good comes out of this rotten economy is that hopefully some mills and BYBs will be shut down.  I have heard the squeeze is on them!

I do Italian Greyhound rescue work for the IGCA.  I personally have fostered and adopted out three IGs this year.  I have also directed new turn ins to other area IG rescues when the "Inn was too full".

It is heartwrenching to work rescue and at the same time, fulfilling.  Believe it or not, many people think my blue boy is a baby Weimie, haha!

Renee - I am sure that the dogs appreciate it, all they want is to be loved and cared for; that is really not so much to ask if you think about it. Keep up the good work you are doing.

Lara - I am not familiar with that term though it fits, especially with the haunting eyes. Now if we can only make sure there are groups looking out for all the others.

Great to see a good cause like this on your blog. I support animal organizations of sorts- they need it. Puppy Mills are finally getting the much needed attention to make people aware of them and expose their hideous practices.
