Fear and Loathing: The Blog Post and Age a Synchronicity

OK I was excited when my IQ was discovered to be the same number as my shoe size but now I am really excited. The number of post I have made is coinciding with my actual age. No, I am not going to tell you what the number is but you can do a bit of detective work and discover that it is 55. OOPS! I did not mean to let that slip out. Now this number is not that great (there are some who seem to be able to do this in a week) but the fact that it is corresponding with my age is meaningful to me.

Anyway, my age is related to this post. I am discovering that this home staging thing is stretching me beyond my comfort zone on many levels. The learning curve for the marketing, networking and especially the twenty new software programs I am learning (OK not twenty but it feels like it).

So my point is that we can stretch ourselves at any age. Personal growth comes from doing something you have not done before. I mean after all if you have done it is not much of a stretch. So what stops us from doing what we want to do? FEAR-usually.

So I say Go for the Roar. What does that mean? I will share a story that was the favorite of one of my teachers, Dr. Ron Herring.lions

It seems that in Africa, lions are the King of the Jungle, so to speak. And one of their favorite foods is gazelles. Now the problem is that gazelles are very, very fast and difficult to catch, especially as the lions age, become arthritic, lose their teeth, as well as their speed. So the lions developed this strategy. The older lions would find a large patch of grass, kneel down, and hide themselves while the younger lions would go round up a bunch of gazelles and begin herding them toward the older lions. The gazelles would be running from the younger lions and then just as they came upon the older lions, these arthritic and near harmless old timers would jump up and let out a huge roar which would frighten the gazelles causing them to turn around and flee with even greater fear running right smack into the younger lions and then they would be caught, killed, and eaten.

The moral of this story is to always- Go for the Roar-that is the way out. Do what you are most afraid of doing. Go beyond your comfort zone, which is the fastest way toward personal growth. Resolve to do one thing every week that you are afraid of doing.  So whether you win lose or draw, the growth comes from the attempt itself.

Awesome post James! :)  Fear keeps us from the BEST life has to offer!  One of my sayings I live by is "DO IT AFRAID"!!! Just DO IT...FEEL THE FEAR...and then once you get on the other side of it...you're FREE!!!  :)

Hey James,

You are pretty well preserved for 55!  All kidding aside, I've got almost 2 years on you!  And I hear what you are saying....when I went into business last summer I decided to give this business, which is my passion, all that I've got because this could be my last chance of greatness!

I happen to believe that there is a solution to every problem -a way around everything.  Just go for it!

Mah Deah, only 55?  a mere kid!

You are preachin' to the choir!  I have conquered so much this year, things I'd never dreamed I'd do.  I have a year of my own business under my belt, lots of ads and personal marketing.  Next week I will teach a class to an entire real estate firm.  I am scared to death, on edge, pumped and after it is done I well feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment.  One of my main goals is to educate realtors and that is going well.    Everything I have done has been preceeded by fear, but NOT to do it is never an option.More than once I have been called Scarlet O'Hara and, like Val ,I believe there is an answer for everything.  That's why we stagers stage.  I enjoy your blogs--Carol

James, You always have such interesting posts! It is nice of you to remind us about stepping out of our comfort zones at any age. Your subdued sense of humor and your background (which is different from most in the HS industry) always make your posts among the most informative and interesting. Should you live to be a million with the equivalent number of posts they would be welcomed.

My favorite quote from a business mentor...was to do one thing every day that made you uncomfortable. I got my biggest client the day I followed that rule

HI James, This is a great post.  I too go over my comfort zone often and just when you think nothing will ever make you as nervous, something else comes along....and you push again.  I tell my daughter not to regret the things she's tried and failed, to regret the things she's never tried because she THOUGHT she might fail.  Thanks for a wonderful post.

Hi James,

Great post - I think it is all about your state of mind.  A colleague from training wrote this great quote on her business card.  It was so freeing, it got me out of the fear box, and I've been ROARIN' ever since.

The quote was "What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?"  I'm not sure who said that but great inspiring quote nevertheless.

James,

I enjoyed most of your post, except where in the comments you are referring to yourself as a Senior Citizen! Please do not do that. I am older than you and have not used that term yet:) The comment above by Marcyne is also what I wanted to say. I have that saying on a silver bar. It's amazing what your answers are to that question.

Karen,

You can't possibly be older than me!  Besides I am just trying to get the senior discounts...actually this year I qualify for senior citizen housing, can you believe that? I don't think I will take them up on it anytime soon but it is a grim reminder. I am now 7 years older than my Father was when I thought he should be committed to a rest home!!! Of course, he is now 85 years old and still holds a job. So, I guess I have a bit of distance to go yet.

My parents are also in their 80's and they definitely are not planning on going anywhere...That is a whole different topic:) If they ever take up blogging, I'm in deep trouble.   I'm going to have to check out those discounts though. And my photo was taken in 2005, Sept. Someone accused me of using photoshop once, which is why I am saying that!  Lets hope we make it into our Eightys!!

Great Post!  The sermon at my (dare I say) church (you never know who you might offend) tonight was the 2nd Mile Career. Moral of the story was if someone asks you to walk with them a mile, walk with them two miles.  Afterward, I looked at my husband who thinks I work to hard and said, "See, I am not undercharging for my work I am just going the second mile".
