DON'T FORGET THE GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE

Somebody Please Put Me Out Of My Misery!!

Every year about this time IT starts.  What is IT you ask?  I am glad you asked because I am going to tell you.  Every year French's start running commercials for IT...the dreaded green bean casserole.  There is a cute little   keeps saying "don't forget the green bean casserole".

Every year for about 20 years my dear sister Chrysta would make IT for Thanksgiving.  I ate IT for many years and then I said to myself......self, why are you eating this mess? One year I stopped by her house right before the holidays and I finally had to let it out.  I gave it to her with both barrells.  I started by telling her that I hope she was not making that casserole. I went on a 20 minute rant abo

ut all of the terrible things I could think of related to this dish....Like this was a dish that the French's & Campbell's people thought of to sell more French Fried Onions and condensed soup.  Who uses french fried onions?  Who eats condensed soup?  And why would you put those two things together?

I went on and on and on....my poor sister just sat there and looked at me like I had lost my mind.  When I finished, she said meekly  "but me and my kids like the green bean casserole".  I could do nothing but laugh.  So every year we have a good laugh and she makes her casserole and I kindly say no thank you :)

So to my sister, my family and friends

Have a Happy Thanksgiving.....and please, leave the French Fried Onions in the cupboard

That was a terrible thing to say to your sister.  All you had to do was say no thanks.  When I visit my mother in law and she makes something that I don't like, I just say no thanks.  Be glad your sister invites you over.

Oh goodness!!!  I cannot understand the popularity of that mess.  Every year, they put it on the table and if I don't help myself to it, the hostess will take a huge lumpy serving spoon full of the mess and dump it on my plate.

Too salty.  Too greesy.

Mushrooms/greenbeans/canned soup/fried onions???  Where is the synergy???

Now green beans are one of my favorite vegetables.  But, leave the flavorings off.  The natural taste is wonderful.

Fried dried salty onions?  I can feel my ankles swelling.

Mushroom soup??  More salt.  Geez.

I'm with you Leander.

How funny! I always tell people who I cook for, don't pretend you like it or you will have to eat it again! I also tell them "this is something I made for myself, you don't have to even try it" since I do tend to experiment. That's great that you and your sister could have a chuckle about this. And for the record, I am in full agreement with you. Condensed soup, onions and green beans from a can, ugh! The only green beans that grace my TG table are lighly sauteed in EVO with a bit of garlic and ginger.

OK Mr. McClain,

This post just proves my theory that you are becoming a crotchety old man! :-) My casserole does not now, nor has it ever contained green beans. For the record, I make a similar casserole with broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. It DOES contain cheese and condensed soup, but does NOT contain french fried onions. It is neither salty nor greasy. To all who are concerned about my feelings, thanks...but be assured that no harm was done. My brother and I have a wonderful relationship which consists of lots of humor. He is nuts, but I wouldn't trade him for the world!

NOW...I think I'll go make a casserole. ROFL!

Well no wonder.....you are from Jersey.  This is an awesome casserole as long as the beans are steamed and not cooked.  I can tell those beans are cooked and not steamed.

You probably don't like grits either.

You need to move to the south where the food is the best and we die young, fat and happy.

PS> I hope you are frying your Turkey this year.

Happy Bird Day....

Too funny ~  I just spoke to my sister who lives in Ohio today and she said the green bean casserole is on her menu! Yikes! I am not a fan of it either! But is sure is popular for whatever reason.

LOL just as I was pulling up your post the Campbell's Green Bean Casserole commercial came on TV! I'm serious - I couldn't help laughing. Now me, I like the stuff, but my family HATES it so I never get it anymore. Everyone forbids me to bring it to the Thanksgiving table. A new casserole takes its place. It has bacon, green beans, and tomatoes. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and be nice to your sister and just take ONE BITE. :) lol

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving, Leander,

This post is too funny. My sister and her family were/are into this dish as well. My youngest son just wouldn't eat it and made no bones about telling anyone within ear shot, how gross he thought the dish was. As for me, I just said, "Thanks but I'll pass.

Leander, too funny. It seems this dish has weaseled it's way onto every ones Thanksgiving table at on time or another. I remember my mother making it over 30 yrs ago...and I hated it then too! But at least it seems to be a source of amusement. Happy Thanksgiving!

Leander, those green beans and french fried onions are one of my Brother-in-laws favorites. Someone has to make it for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Every Year there it sits,in it's pretty casserole dish, with one lonely scoop out of it. A congealed mass of soup, beans, mushrooms and soggy fried onions. Scary. Very scary......

My money would be on your sister... I bet she made the casserole and you still ate it.  :-)   At my sister-in-laws they make some jello thing.  it's lemon-lime jello with celery (thats right.. celery), nuts, cottage cheese, and some other things.  It is FAR from the jello I grew up with.  You know 'watch it wiggle, see it jiggle...'  YUCK!  I never eat it, yet there is always a large bowl right there at the table.  And its not even treated as a desert... its a side item next to stuffing and potatos

Well Everyone,

I survived Thanksgiving and there was not a green bean casserole to be found....thank the Lord.  I did however have to skirt a pan of corn pudding and carrot salad.  But we will save those rants for another day. It was a wonderful day filled with family, food and fun and I thank God for my family.  Now onto Christmas.

Have a great day

Leander,

Thanks for the post. Glad you were spared the casserole. I too can't abide by the casserole, just totally unappetizing!

Leander this made me laugh, I have never made green bean casserole however I cooked all types of beans for many years before my husband admitted he did not like beans.  My question was; so why didn't you tell me instead of eating it all these years just to be polite?
