Many of you have experienced and lived with these lighting fixtures.

light fixture Dream Interior Redesign and Home Staging, Coarsegold CAFor some reason contractors in our area still think that these albatross fixtures are still ok in kitchens and baths.  I know of three spec. builders that persist in putting these into their new builds and that is just crazy in today's lighting market.  In the shop or garage, OK but in the house, PLEASE they need to be updated.

Recently Dream Interior Redesign and Home Staging was asked to advise on a home staging and also on separate kitchen redesign.  Here are some products that can help homeowners be energy efficient BUT with more style.

Whether in Chrome or Bronze what a big improvement and at a great price compared with some retail lighting specialty stores.  I found these at Home Depot.

When preparing a house for the resale, or new sale market, updating the lighting fixtures will impress the potential buyers and help make the sale.

Ginger ~ I still see those outdated box-type light fixtures too in many homes built in the 70's ... they have to go!  The ones you found at Home Depot are a great replacement.  I hope you can convince your area builders and contractors to use them instead!

Thank you very much for this timely post!  My hubby and I are planning a vacation home in the mountains, and he suggested that we use a flourescent box like we did in a 1976 home we flipped in VA Beach in 2005.  Of course the key words here are 1976 and flipped.  Now, our own house?  No way!  So, thanks for saving me the time of looking for an alternative.  These are way better.

Maureen, I think these contractors have warehouses full of contractor-grade ugly light fixtures because every conversation that I have with them takes me no where.  Between hollywood strip lights in the bathroom, round globes above the kitchen sink and these fluorescents their houses do stand out from the crowd but not in a good way.

I think most counties and states have built into the building codes that there has to be fluorescents in certain locations in new builds but to install these today is just awful.

Next I'm working on renewing a fluorescent recessed light box....the ones with the acrylic panels that we also see in too many kitchens.  I think that we have a good alternative going in and I will post the results when it's done.

Thanks a lot for commenting.

Nicola, glad to be of help.  I too want a couple of these because the first photo is from my mud room and I want to replace 2 of them.    The problem will be convincing my very practical and not asthetically minded husband that it's a worthy purchase and install.

I also found these online at, Lamps Plus (I think?) but they were much more expensive.

Patricia, as I said above to Maureen,  my husband would think that would be fine too.  AHHH, no way.  He can put them in his shop or garage ALL DAY but not in the house.  Your mountain vacation house sounds like a fun project.

Those look great! For the longer florescents I use an updated track (one has an S curve to it) which works beautifully as well. Updating lighting is a fabulous investment.

Ginger,

Updated fixtures are a quick way to update a home.  Thanks for sharing this information.

Allegra I totally agree.  It's one of the first things that I often recommend to sellers. Afterall when the lights are on what are potential buyers going to notice?  Thanks for commenting.

Patty, thank you for commenting.  Now I have to convince some sellers to use these!

I love those oval lights!  I just replaced mine with this light below:

Light

It looks better in person and fits perfect in my not-so-high-end house.  It is fluorescent which puts out a lot of light as opposed to the track lighting that my husband refused to let me get!  Not bad looking for $89.00 plus the cost of two T-8 tubes at Home Depot.

Cindy thanks so much for commenting and for adding the picture of yours.  I didn't see this one at my Home Depot so I will have to go on-line and search it out.  I think that my hubby would agree to these in most locations.

Ginger,

Thank goodness the styles for fluorescent lights are changing!  A lot of times homeowners do not have the budget to change out electrical work or to hire an electrician which can be costly, so to have these NEW options is a great and inexpensive way to update!

Michelle I hear what you're saying.  I've finally found a handy-man that will do simple electrical fixture switch-outs without charging electrician's rates.  Changing fixtures is so simple but if people are afraid of electricity then I always recommend they hire it done.  If I can do it, anyone can but I have learned how to be safe so as not to be afraid.

This week's TO DO LIST is contact these local contractors and show them what they SHOULD be using and these are still in keeping with our building codes.

Thanks for commenting.

Hi Ginger,

Thanks for the update on fluorescent fixtures - love the ones at Home Depot!  I have a client who currently has a sunshine ceiling and we may be able to switch it for one of these to update.

Ginger,

Just an update, yesterday I bought another fixture for another house (just like mine - the one I posted the pic of) and it was only $84.00, not $89.00.  I forgot to mention that it is oil rubbed bronze metal and much nicer looking than the photo.

Ummmm no contest, the new light wins hands down.  They are making them better and better these days, aren't they.  Nice post, good info.

Judith, thanks for the comment.  What is a sunshine ceiling?  Never heard of that one?

Cindy, thanks for the update.  I checked out Home Depot's online selection of fixture and the ones I photographed plus yours are my favorites for replaces the old long ones.

Terrylynn, it's about time wouldn't you say.  I'm so tired of walking into all of the spec. houses and see the same OLD stuff.  Wouldn't you think that these builders would consult a specialist once and a while?  Perhaps I'm dreaming because it appears that it's all about the bottom line, contractor- grade fixtures...yuck!  If that what buyer's see, what's behind the walls??? It would make me wonder.

I hate these too.  The florescent lights are also not very forgiving!

Hi Cindy, you mean you don't care for that green cast?  I resist trying on clothing in stores where there's only flourescents because besides looking green, my hair turns bronzy...yuck.  However, here in Calif. they are required by building code in some rooms, so thankfully they don't have to look so utilitarian anymore.  Thanks for commenting.

Hi Ginger -

You are right. Those lights don't belong in a house. I had to remove mine years ago and install recessed, but it was a big job. I actually have the light you pictured in my office. You can't beat Home Depot for their prices.

Kelly thanks for your input.  As much as we know that these are utility lights, for the garage or workshop, some contractors continue to install them and I can't convince them to do something else.  I guess that they need to hear from their buyers that they won't accept these low-dollar fixtures and that there are alternatives available.
