How To Add Image Tags- Optimizing Your Images' SEO

When I wrote a post about going viral in your social web 2.0 marketing  we received a lot of questions. The question that was asked the most is how do you title your photos. I am first going to show you how to add image title tags to your photos and images that you put on your Active Rain Blog. If you blog on another platform than the format will be similar.

When you are using the Active Rain editor to write your post there is a little square on the tool bar that has a tree on it. This is the image uploader tab. When I first started blogging on Active Rain I had no idea how to add an image. So if you don't know, that is O.K., just follow these instructions.

Active rain image uploader

After you choose a photo either browsing your computer or adding the image URL from PhotoBucket or Flickr; you  will see the image in the larger box. Above that box is where you add your Title tags and description field.

active rain image tag fields
This is where you can get some great Google juice. Google and Yahoo index images. If you research your keywords and Title your images with those keywords that is going to improve your SEO for your blog and websites.  Don't be spammy.  Most of the time you will want to use your keywords but make sure your image description is really some sort of description if this is a highly searched  topic because the image description is how people who are blind can tell what the photo is about. You can add the keyword at the beginning and then describe the image after that. Please be courteous.

If you click on the Appearance tab you can resize your images to fit better on your post. Here is also where you choose in what part of the post you want your image to display on. If you click on your post where you want your image to be, make sure you see your curser there, then click the image uploader tab and from there you can choose to display the image to the right of your text or to the left, centered or at the bottom of the text. It gives you a lot of creative choices.

Remember to read all the terms of use for any clipart and images that you are using for your blogs and websites. Most of the sites that I have been to only allow personal use of their clipart not business or commercial use. I use Iclipart because there are over 7 million images that you can use on your business blogs and sites. I like it because it is one stop image search for me. If my image is not a photo that I took myself it is from IClipart. Try it for free for a couple of weeks. Right now they have a yearly special going on, unlimited use of IClipart for just $29.95. You can not beat that price for safe images that you have permission to use.

First time you gave me a lot of relief. Believe it or not, I knew this. Wow. All other times I always do not know, and now I know.

Am I getting smarter of this is just a conincidence? (LOL)

Katerina - a well done useful explanation. I know all this now, but sure could have used it when starting out. Should be part of the newbies guide on how to's. I have even gone back through old post when checking links and such to update the photo tags.

Thanks, Nestor and Katerina.

Sometimes when we get involved in other SEO strategies, it's easy enough to forget the basics. Very few people take the time to add image tags.

Katerina... this is a good reminder... I first learned this from one person, then from Missy Caulk about a year ago. I always just wrote the same for both the image description and the title. But after reading this, I guess I will add more to my image description.  thanks

Thanks for a "refresher" on this important feature we have here in AR. I thought it would look silly to put "midtown atlanta real estate" on a picture of a pumpkin, but if I understand, just mention the pumpkin after the midtown phrase?

I'm all about google juice!

Katerina,

Up until now I did not see the importance in adding the image description.  Thanks for bringing this to the front of my mind and setting off a light bulb.

I too did not know of the importance of tagging ones picture's. I'm waiting for more coaching so I can help you pay it forward.

HI KAT!

You know, I've always put a title to my pictures, but not the description.  I'll start doing that now!

Marketing Naples FL  Your post is very helpful.  Active Rain is a great network but WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors are not all self explanatory if you see them for the first time.   And yes, you are right in all your statements, so everyone better listen! :)

Thanks for the tip and the reminder. I always learn so much from you guys! And thanks for the link as well to the clipart!  You have helped me immensely. Very straight forward and easy to follow for me the "one step at a time or I will go into overload" person!  I look forward to more of your blogs!

Katerina - You are right this works so well.  Two years ago I had someone find me because they found a picture I had tagged.  How you put it really made sense!

Katerina thanks for the reminder. It is a great way to gain additional google juice. Sometimes the photo just doesn't have anything special - it's generic, so how do you tag that for google juice when it wouldn't make any sense? Like if you have an image from a free photo service to get a point across? Thanks for your response if you have time :)

I have always just put what the picture was on both the title and description lines.  I guess I was adding google juice to the picture more than my blog.  Using keywords and a keyword description sound much better to me now.

I also put the same thing in both spots and have a key word included; I hope that is okay.  I do know what you say is true.  I took a picture of the Indianapolis Colts new stadium and if you Google it, my picture shows up in the top three.  Now...if I can just get my blog to show up in a coveted spot!

Cindy- You need to blog with keywords. But is it not just keywords. You need to discover what the keywords are that people are searching for.

Please excuse my ignorance but I do not even know how to get my photo on this reply.  Do I have to enter the photo everytime I reply to a post? Or do I set it up in my profile section?
