happy thanksgiving

I have finally finished raking all the leaves and the squirrels are busy gathering  acorns for the winter.  New Hampshire just missed a snow storm and everyone is getting things ready for Thanksgiving.

It has been a challenging year.  However, it is when times are the most difficult that we tend to grow the most.  We are strong, resilient and have hope!

Perhaps, this bad economy has some benefits.  One benefit is that many people are rediscovering what is important in life! It allows us to focus on all that we have and what is possible to achieve.

The other day I was in a store with one of my grandnieces and there was a sign stating "We have Lay-away!"

My grandniece exclaimed -- "what is lay-away"? --

So, I explained that when there is something you want, but you don't have all the money you need to buy it, you put a down payment on it.  Then each week you make a payment until you have paid the full price.  Then you can take the items home!

She saw a beautiful sweater she wanted and we opened up the lay-away account!  She is SAVING part of her allowance each week so she can make the weekly payment and she is requesting to do more chores so she can earn a little extra cash!  ....Hmmm- maybe we don't need all those credit cards after all

So, I wish for everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.  May you enjoy friends and family and all the wonderful flavors of the season.

Joan:  What a great thing for your grandniece to discover.  The actually value of money, and the art of saving for something, and then buying it.  Awesome.  I am sure she will enjoy the sweater much more once she finally makes that last payment and takes the sweater home with her.  Cool !  Thanks for sharing.

Your comment about raking the leaves and seeing the squirrels took me very quickly to the time I lived in Northeastern Ohio.  Raking the leaves in the fall was a weekly thing... and I really enjoyed the squirrels.  I rarely seem them here in Fort Worth.  Darn...

Joan, I heard one of the toy stores was offering lay away again....I actually think it's brilliant to bring that back!  Especially right now.  It would have us all saving :)

Karen Anne  The leaves were beautiful this year!  We were lucky it hasn't snowed yet this year and I was able to get 99% of the leaves off the ground.  Of course, I had some help from my husband and I had a young kid assisting so he could earn some x-mas money!  The squirrels are fun to watch as they get things ready for a long winter.  They also are enjoying the sunny days right now.  Happy Thanksgiving.

Richard  It is interesting that the concept of lay away is back!  Some of the "old" ways of doing things may not have been so bad after all.  It will be interesting to see some of the other benefits of these challenging economic times.   I do think this has given my grandniece a whole new awareness of the value of moving, saving and working for something she wants.  Happy Thanksgiving and I hope you are having some great weather in Hawaii.

Jean  Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.  I hope you have a delicious day!

Carol   I think a lot of us have stepped back to take a moment to focus on what is important to us and to be thankful for those things.  Happy Thanksgiving.

Mary  It sounds from what I hear on the news and what I read, that many have forgotten about saving.  We had gotten too dependent on the credit cards.  I am looking forward to going with my grandniece to pick up her sweater!  I am sure it is going to be a priceless moment!  Happy Thanksgiving.

Carole I am amazed at how this lay away concept is turning into a learning experience for my grandniece!  Her mom likes the fact that she keeps coming around asking to do more chores to earn some money!  Hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Hi Joan... I think that the return of Lay-Away is just what this country needs.  We have whole generations of consumers for whom credit cards are the solution to wanting things financially out of reach.  I attribute that shift to the need for immediate gratification that is prevalent in our society.  There is nothing wrong with saving for something you want and receiving it then.  It teaches us the value of saving and the benefits of financial responsibility.  Thanks for sharing such a poignant story!

What a great post, I think I'll head over to the store and put 25 cents down on next years turkey.  Hopefully by Thanksgiving next year, I'll have it paid off! LOL~  Have a great Thanksgiving Joan.  :-))

Happy Thanksgiving Steve!  I thought these story really has a lot of meaning!  I appreciate your thoughts and agree that it is time that we got back to the basics.  I always thought credit cards were to be used for emergencies!  I must admit, I got away from the emergency policy some years ago.  I have not see my grandniece so excited about buying something -- and her mom is loving all those new chores she is doing!

Brad~  You have me laughing so hard!  I hope you get a fresh organic turkey(lol)!   Hope you and your family are having a delicious holiday!

How old is your grandneice? This is actually a great lesson in hold to handle money and expenses. More people these days need to review these practices.

Joan, what a wonderful lesson in financial responsiblity you are teaching.  Now maybe you can teach that lesson the the BIG 3 auto makers.... or our congress reps!

Regina  I think the 3 auto makers better get it right this time!  There is a lot on the line here and many people will be affected by how they proceed!  Congress needs to have strings attached and make these people accountable for the money they receive -- or else!

I love the new group and am going to join.  Thanks for the heads up!

Raking? Squirrels? Acorns? Winter? Snow storm? I'm going to have to go get my dictionary.

I remember layaway from when I was growing up. It's making a comback here, too.

Jim  I am sure you won't have too much snow to deal with in San Diego -- I am soooo jealous.  I like snow for x-mas and then I am ready for spring!  Lay-away -- is BACK -- all the store around here now are advertising they have lay away.
