Make a Rule - Something goes out if Something comes in

By

Unless you're starting from scratch, with no clothes, and an empty house - make a rule that for something to come in, something must first go out. Want a new pair of shoes? Fine - but take a pair that you aren't wearing anymore and send them to a thrift shop or the trash. Buying a new book? ok, but take one off your shelf and give it to someone else or donate it to a library or sell it to a used bookstore. New clothes? Be stylish - but first take something out of your closet and pass it on to someone who will treasure it. One person's trash is another person's treasure. When you stop loving something and using it and appreciating it - pass it on to someone else who will.

Sharon, what GREAT advice. I'm trying to do that now...I'm getting to the point that I want to "thin" out. ;-)

Hi Sharon, Being a clothes-a holic, I sure wish I could do what you are suggesting. If I live to 100 I couldn't wear it all, I suppose. Every year I give so much away and nothing is very much worn. I have old sweat shirts that are fraying and I wear them way to often. I give the better things away.:-). I will will do better with that this year as I am having my first garage sale since moving into this home 8 years ago and I am sure there are special things that will go in this sale. I like keeping things looking new , even the stuff I no longer use. I want people to enjoy the bargain.

William - if you look in my house or office, you'll see that I don't practice what I preach. That doesn't mean it's not a goal, though. Sometimes the old, frayed clothes are the most comfortable.

Sharon, You are going to think I am eccentric but I have had a nice looking, expensive sweather that I just no longer wanted.  I was going to drop it off at Goodwill so that someone that needed it could buy it at a cheap price and enjoy wearing it.  But I really wanted to give it to someone.  Today I took it to the grocery store, told my husband that someone is getting a gift today, went into the little cafe inside the store and "accidentally" left it on a chair.  After shopping, I checked and it was gone.  I hope someone who needed it got it.  Very nice sweater.
