When I was a kid, I had a "pen pal" who lived in Japan.  I can't for the life of me remember his name now, but I really used to look forward to getting his letters in the mail.  Heck, when I was a kid, I used to look forward to getting ANYTHING in the mail.  Back then, cards from my grandmother in Corpus Christi held the promise of a crisp five-dollar bill (or maybe even a small check!).

Since it generally requires actual handwriting with a pen or pencil, the concept of having pen pals seems like something from history class now, with the advent of the internet.  However, I thought this was something that my kids might enjoy now, and a quick Google search yields plenty of options for finding pen pals around the world.

I was thinking about how social networking is really just taking the concept of a pen pal onto the internet.  I recently taught a webinar about the basics of blogging and social media marketing, and I mentioned that virtually everything that you do in person now has an equivalent online.

In this case, many of my friends from ActiveRain are really just pen pals when you think about it.  Although I have had the pleasure of meeting many of my online friends in person, and speaking with countless others, there are literally hundreds of people that I consider friends whom I only know from our banter back and forth via the written word.  Pen pals!

I was never that great about writing letters when I was younger, and I will readily admit that this hasn't changed much as an adult.  I am terrible about procrastinating with "thank you" notes.  In fact, I had a stack of names and good intentions when I sat down to write notes for my birthday party (which was in AUGUST, mind you), yet I never got around to mailing them out.  Now that so many months have passed, it seems more embarrassing somehow to send them.  I would welcome your opinions on this topic, frankly.

Outside of the business benefits, I guess there are really a number of reasons that I enjoy the social interaction here on AR:

  • It allows me to develop friendships with people in areas and states that I am unfamiliar with
  • I can make a LOT of friends pretty easily, just by being consistent with my blogging and commenting
  • I feel like I vindicated myself as a pen pal, since I seem to do a better job here than I did back then!

If you are one of my online buddies, I want to thank you for making 2008 more palatable for me.  This was a tough year for many in our industry, and the support that I found here made the bad stuff seem easier to tolerate.  I am certainly blessed on a personal level, but I can confidently state that AR has given me a huge boost of confidence in my business.

Thank you so much for your friendship!

Let's see 2000 Facebook friends and how many followers on twitter??  You are the  epitome of penpal.

I had three pen pals as a kid.  I wonder if they have "text pals" these days...

Now there's a blast from the past!  I had several pen pals as a kid and always looked forward to when the mail arrived, anticipating mail from them.  It's a lost art.  Things have gone all tech.

Jason-Thank you too. I have enjoyed reading your post on Rain and some on Twitter. Like you, I am looking forward to a great year in 2009 too...

This is better than any penpal I had as a kid. It's almost like the members here have become my best friends even though we haven't met.

I remember when having a 'pen pal' was an absolute must.  It was even required in my 3rd grade class.  Supposedly to teach us to compose sentences, use correct punctuation and learn about other areas.  It worked!

With the advent of technology this practice has become so much easier ... more 'real time' ... and is a whole lot more fun!

Thanks for being so entertaining, honest, genuine, human and professional.  You have lots to be proud of.

Proud to have you as a 'pen pal' in a world where life is hectic, schedules are harried and life is sometimes an imposition.

Jason - It's amazing how technology has changed in such a few short years.  I wasn't very good at writing letters, either.  I know that I really appreciate your posts!  :)

I think what is surprising, how technology progresses. We got to computer era, and we thought that the art of writing is gone. And then it came back as e-mails. We thought that now we can be always at a distance, and anonymous. Now we are getting up close with Facebook, twitters and a lot of other means.

Before we meet someone and like the person, but reality was that we communicate only with who we see. Now the world is on your scrreen, and you "see' those who are far.

We basically do the same things we did before, they are simply coming in different packaging

As I recall from third grade, pen pal coomunication went something like this:

Dear Jason,

How are you.  I am fine.  The weather here was cold, today.  How is it in your city?

Your pen pal,
Marilyn

As they say..."We've come a long way, baby!"

Similarly, I always wanted to keep a journal, but found 'writing' with pen difficult...Then came blogging!!! A Godsend! Thanks,   Fran

I never had a pen pal when I was younger, so I never really thought of AR in that sense, but now that you mention it that is a good way to look at it.

9:34pm • #15

Agreed.  Writing is so much easier when it's just a few keystrokes to keep in touch.  Plus, you don't have to write an entire letter.  Just a few sentences that are pertinent to the paragraphs just written so you can stay in touch.  But, you get more meaning in a few short sentences, and a feel for the writer, too.  Keep up the great work!

I did an entire post on the power of notes.  Keystrokes are great, but I have to say, the personal, handwritten note (I believe) rules.  I think that it's dominating.  But the keystroke is so much more immediate.

Now that so many months have passed, it seems more embarrassing somehow to send them.  I would welcome your opinions on this topic, frankly.

Send them!  I follow the "better late, than never" policy.  You've got nothing to worry about.  I've got you beat by a country mile on the whole procrastination thing.  I'm coming up on two years for a couple thank you notes.  :)

Jason, it was funny you mentioned pen pals. That was something "back in the day" that I was very consistent with. I guess it was good practice for blogging. I still thoroughly use snail mail unlike pretty much anyone. I think single handedly I am keeping the post office in business LOL. Handwritten notes are a lost art form. But I still love sending and receiving them. I must be like a 1 in 100 person in this category. A living dinosaur in your midst.

Jason, you are welcome. It is indeed a tight knit group with only the objective of sharing and getting along. I find the benefits numerous both socially and for business. And after all aren't we simply in business to meet more people to be more social and do more business? I have never understood how we can successfully separate the 2. Social media is awesome.

Thanks

Bo

LEANNE - You're right.  I also think of letter writing as largely a lost art.  One of my goals is to get better about handwritten notes.

LAURA - Thanks for your kind compliment.  I think 2009 will be a terrific year, and I hope this is the case not just locally, but nationally as well.

LIZETTE - You're right.  I feel like the friendships forged here are very strong indeed.  I love this place!

MARLENE - It really is unique and very cool, isn't it?

JIM - It's sort of like "Extreme Pen Pals"!  I have also really enjoyed the supportive nature of this network of friends.

CAROL - I am blushing now!  Thank you for your incredibly nice comments.  I have also enjoyed getting to know you on Twitter lately.  I'm sure we will meet in person some day.  After all, you are my backup mom!

DEBI - Thanks for saying that.  You're right - things change SO quickly these days, don't they?

JON - That is a great perspective.  It's the same basic stuff, but in a different package.  I like that!

MARILYN - I think I probably wrote a letter or two like that, even to family members!

DONA - Thanks!  I appreciate your readership and I look forward to getting to know you better in the upcoming months.

FRAN - I have seen blogging here on AR as a Godsend as well.  Good stuff, my man.

JL - Glad you liked the analogy.  You have plenty of pen pals now!

SABINSKE & ASSOCIATES - You are correct.  It is so much easier to connect and make friends than in previous years.

LARRY - It's such a lost art form that it truly is more powerful now.  Who doesn't enjoy getting personal mail (i.e. NOT bills)?  Great job!

BRUCE - You're right.  I am going to go ahead and send them out sometime before 2009.  :)

PAUL - I think I learned about pen pals from TV, which is where I spent entirely too much time as a kid.

KATERINA - I'm happy to have you as a pen pal, too!  The notion of having a pen pal was something that just sort of struck me yesterday.

GARY - I don't think you are a dinosaur - I think you're on top of your game.  I am going to try to make this a habit in 2009.  I also love receiving notes like this, but I've never been great/consistent about sending them out.

TAMI - It happens very quickly, and yes, I know a lot of people on here now.  Thanks for your compliment!  I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying my blog.

MARZENA - That's true - I feel like many of my friends here are part of my extended family.

ANN - I think my writing skills here are a lot better than when I had a pen pal.  At least, I hope they are!

BO - Right you are.  Trying to separate the two is foolish, in my opinion.  Every new friend has the potential to send you business!

ROBIN - I feel the same way.  Thanks for your friendship!

DON - I think I have improved in this arena since I was a kid.  Hope you're having a terrific Sunday, my friend.

TONY - I guess you could say that I have had online popularity thrust upon me, in a way.  I've been here since August 2007 and I just write and interact a lot.  I have also helped to start a number of groups.  I have a lot of regular readers and subscribers, so I think most people on AR know who I am at this point.  No big secret - just consistent with my blogging, and pretty open about the things I choose to write about.  Thanks for stopping by!

I also had lots of pen pals when I was a kid.  Most of the time I'd start a new one every vacation.  They were all in the USA though... and I do remember most of the names.  Funny that I never thought about it in those terms of AR being like my old pen pals, but it's true.

Oh and congrats on making it to 400k in points.  WOW and in only 16 months.  WOW.

I forgot about pen pals.  I used to do that and wait anxiously for a response.  I still feel that way with my posts or e-mail I send - only I hadn't equated it with the pen pal phenomenon.  No matter how much I feel I am an introvert and comfortable with the social media (internet rather than in person many times), I still want to feel connected.

Jason, I had a pen pal from Japan as well.  Her name is Yukari Nakayama and I actually looked her up after I was married.  She was married as well but we lost touch again.  I used to love to get her letters, on that thin airmail paper.  Her handwriting was so neat and precise and her life was so different than mine.  I wish I could find her again.  Social networking is a lot like having pen pals, only more instant gratification!

Jason - As things like ActiveRain have not brought me any business (so far), I had to say that I do it more for the enjoyment of it all and the "pen pal" aspect of it.  I hope to never lose that feeling and become too jaded by just doing it for business.  It is a part of my business plan, but its not exclusively why I do it.  I guess I find it a nice outlet for all the things I have to say or things I want to hear what others have to say about.

That connected with me !  I've always loved writing.......and used to write long letters........for me the benefit to online pal - ing is that i can type faster then I can write - and 'they' can get the message instantly.........and I can save myself a copy so I can remember what I wrote!  I had 4 pen pals growing up......one in Brazil and one in France.......one in Spain that I got to meet when I went to Europe........who took me and showed me all over Spain.....his dad was the doctor for the Madrid Coca Cola company.......it was too cool.......and then there was my friend in Holland who I started writing with  when I was 14.......We met in Holland when I went to Europe..........and he came to Vancouver and surprised me at my wedding......today  almost 40 years later we still write to each other, only today by e-mail......he lives in Costa Rica......and I consider him one of my dearest friends....
