Its a funny thing when talking to people...when they ask your opinion or want some serious training..sometimes when I speak..they don't exactly like what I have to say....but the truth is as human beings we tend to point out our fine qualities within ourselves in conversations.

We tend to tell  the coach and the trainer what we do so right... Especially when we are being critiqued...when we are being coached...and sometimes when we are being led.

You requested this service..It's time to look at your mistakes!

I sometimes notice it in myself...its a defense mechanism..and as humans we sometimes take opinions too personally..we tend to overlook our own flaws but then someone lights the fire under your feet...and has the guts to ask you..

"Do you want people to look at you as a has been?"

Yes I have those types of conversations..along with the words..and?  your point? so what? because usually what follows..is a list of excuses..or a list of the things they do right!

Think about it..Is this really going to make a difference? To tell your trainer or coach what you do so right...when you have hired us..to take you to the next level...when it's clear..

You want to improve or do you?

If you are so great in some areas.why zero in on those?  Does it not make sense to take a look at the flaws.and try to improve on those particular skills and areas in your life?

The Flaws Can Affect The Outcome in What You Do So Right!

It's painful for some..and the old saying comes to mind, "It hurts me as much as it hurts you!"....yeah..my dad said to me growing up...and to think there was some truth in what he was saying.

So the next time you sit..with your coach or your trainer..share your mistakes and areas where you would like to improve..listen to them..and accept what they have to say..even if it hurts you as much as it hurts them..by focusing on your mistakes rather than all of your great qualities..I promise you..you will see improvement and a better shot at increasing your revenue...and your previous mistakes...will be that and nothing more!

Hi Midori. Oh I think that sounds wonderful........I want to improve so I would not mind hearing what I need to change or start doing...someone was supposed to coach me, but has not and I am looking for a coach that will actaully make that commitment. When I find that person I am going to make sure they will tell me what my flaws are so I can change! :)

Midori, great post and inspirational.  I guess some people in any business can be in denial and do not like to know about their weaknesses and/or flaws.  I think the ones that are open-minded about it and are willing to improve on those weaknesses have the biggest growth opportunites.  I have a feeling you are one of the best coaches and trainers !!!!  ~ Chris

Woo Hoo!  Too true!  A mistake that you don't learn from AND improve upon is a wasted experience.  I also like to brag about my mistakes!  Really.  I figure if it happened to me, there is probably someone else out there facing the same or similiar situation.  Blogging is a great forum for sharing our failures.

I always say I Fail Forward to Success!  I do enjoy finding the lesson in my mistakes. I do know what I'm doing wrong and I need help to overcome it.  It is a lack of discipline and consistency more than anything else.  I need to build the momentum and continue building rather than riding it.  We all know what happens on a ski hill -  you end up at the bottom eventually!   I wrote a post looking for an Accoutibility Partner and was shocked to find only 2 people were interested.  Out of 121000 AR members there were only 2 that felt that need???   Amazing!

Thanks Midori for a great post!

Midori you are so right, 2009 will be challenging so now is the time to face reality, learn from mistakes, stop doing the things that don't make sense and concentrate on building needed skills.

Thanks for the reminder

Guilty As Charged!

If I had been more proactive in seeking to minimize my flaws, I would have been able to prevent some of the current conditions in my personal and professional life.

I encourage my peers to enlist the help of someone that is COMPETENTLY capable to identify AND, this is most important, assist in addressing these flaws.

By the end of 2009, I hope to report progress in neutralizing the tremendous amount of flaws in my personality. As Always....Great Post Midori!

Most people know what their mistakes are and know what they need to do.  Unfortunately they are not willing to do it.

No pain no gain... mistakes are painful...but without them you don't learn and you certainly don't gain.

Hmm. Interesting that people immediately start to defend the very thing(s) that need work. Sounds like you've had some psychology training. Have you?

I think that I am going to need a coach but, I don't know if I can stop making excuses.  Do you know someone that can help with that problem first?

Midori, I enjoyed reading your blog and you're absolutely right.  We should sit back and analyze our mistakes, and try and learn from them so that we can become better at what we do.   I think initially we instinctively try to avoid thinking about our mistakes because it's often painful to reflect on them.  Naturally, everyone likes to think they're perfect, right?  But as Monika said earlier, "no pain, no gain."

Excellent observations but it is often very difficult to look in the mirror and see the problem staring back at you.  Like muscle building or distance running, you must first break down the body to make it stronger or improve conditioning.  So it is with coaching and business.  The tough part is finding those people willing to undergo the transformation.

Midori~Great post, as usual...although I'm feeling a little "emotional bootcamp" coming on...it's obvious you are no "fluff and buff" coach, but instead, one who will tell it like it is. Good, bad or ugly...we all need to know and adapt.

Hope you had a good turkey day!

I clicked on your post at the presise moment I needed it.  I had just gotten a message from a former client who recently listed his property with someone else wanting me to mail him his key.  It was over a commission agreement he signed and then was unhappy with but instead of talking to me he just listed with someone else at the end of the agreement and left me a message to mail him his key.  I was taking this as a personal rejection.  I had put up my wall and then read your post and am all calmed down again and ready to move on and be positive.  Thanks
