It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood; wind and snow!

Snow means that we will have more terrain open at the ski areas.  It means that more people will come The view from my office in Frisco Coloradoup here for ski trips and they will be renting condos.  It means that people may decide that they don't really want to fight the snowy roads and the traffic on Sunday night as they head home, and perhaps they will decide to buy a colorado condo and stay longer!

Not many places love getting snow, but we do.  Our economy in the mountains of Colorado relies on it.  We have four major ski areas in Summit County; Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mountain and Arapaho Basin.  More than two thirds of our housing is owned by second home owners, and some of those people also rent their homes and condos on a part time basis.  The more snow we have, the better we like it.

Wildflowers in Summit CountyMany people come here for the winter, and then discover our summers.  Summer is even more incredible (and much shorter) than the winter.  Daytime temperatures are usually in the 70s.  A hot day is 80'.  We don't have air conditioning as we don't need it and opening a couple of windows is sufficient.

I will say that last year we had too much snow.  You don't hear me saying that very often.  We didn't get snow until Thanksgiving, and once it started, it didn't stop.  That is ok until April, because we love powder days, but he ski areas close mid-April.  This year, many ski areas closed with an 80" base, but people in Denver are playing golf and are no longer interested in skiing.  If there are no paying customers, it does no good for them to stay open.   Locals all have season passes so they make no money if we ski longer.

In May, we are ready to get out in the garden and on the hiking trails.  Last June we still had so much snow on the peaks that we couldn't do any mountain hikes until the middle of the month.  It was lucky for us that it melted slowly because we could have had flooding otherwise, but we all had a serious case of cabin fever by the time June 1st rolled around. Hiking Colorado peaks

Little snow came this fall, and we were all getting anxious.  With the economy the way it is, having no snow would have been the death of many local businesses.  But now it is snowing!  Copper Mountain has had 26" in the last three days and we are hopeful that last years pattern will repeat (except it can stop May 1st this year!)

Joanne, Your pictures are lovely!  You do have a short summer and it's not hot there...but you can keep all the snow you get and take any of ours from New York...I'm not looking forward to it.

Hi Carole, we will take all you can send us!  We prefer no wind though.  I-70 closed tonight because of wind and snow.  Lots of Thanksgiving traffic heading back to Denver, and they are either moving very slowly if they are beyond the closure or stuck here until the highway reopens.  I remember a wonderful ski day when I-70 closed coming up from Denver.  We had the mountain with fresh powder all to ourselves!

Hi Joanne, Are you getting much snow from the storms coming through? Breckenridge is one of my all time favorite places to go. I hope to buy a vacation home in the area in the next couple of years. Your photos are beautiful!

Hi Karyn,

I skied yesterday on about 10" of new snow, and we are supposed to get more tonight and tomorrow.  Good skiing!  Stop in when you are in town and say hi!

Hi Dena,

the skiing is awesome right now!  We have had good snow and this weekend will have sunshine and warm temperatures.  I will be glued to the TV watching the inauguration festivities but I know there will be lots of people out there enjoying the snow.

Great post Joanne! This is by far one my most favorite places to visit. I must say I have only been to the area when there's snow on the ground and can't wait to check it out in the summer time. But to much snow? I will believe you since I don't live their. I also didn't know that so many second home owners make summit county their home. Anyway the best site I have found for lodging options in the area is by far www.keyvacationrentals.com

This year for my family vacation we stayed at Creste Butte family lodging with Iron Horse rental property. This was the perfect setting for a fabulous family vacation getaway.  It is a luxurious 4 bedrooms (3 are master suites!) with 5 full baths and 2 half baths.  We had 15 staying very comfortably in the 6000 sq/ft.  We had a hot tub, pool table,  media room, game room, wet bar, fireplace & wine cellar.  We enjoyed a gourmet kitchen big enough for everyone. The main room has a wall of windows, overlooking spectacular views. Infact every window has wonderfully scenic views, even the laundry room!  The master suite has a king bed, outdoor deck and sumpuous master bath with steam shower and jetted tub.  All of the bedrooms have flat screen televisions.  It is impecably decorated.  So beautiful and relaxing.  We were able to ski right to and from our front door.   The heated garage is so nice and big enough for our SUV and everyones skis. It’s like staying in your very own ski resort.

I highly recommend taking advantage of the vacation deals at Iron Horse vacation rentals for your family vacations.  They have vacation homes that sleep from 2 to  17 and the prices are reasonable.  We are planing our next family vacation to say at Iron Horse Properties.
