Google

I did a post on Google and marketing back on 12/12/06 titled Marketing..... Good or Bad. Google always seems to amaze me not only in their search engine capabilities, but on how they just come up with the change of their logo. Especially when they want to get a message out there or show their support for certain observances or periods of time throughout the year.

Today was Earth Day which is observed on April 22nd, which marks the precise moment of the beginning of spring. I think there are many reasons why Earthday is mentioned in the Northern hemisphere. But we need to pay attention to it even more than ever because of how we abuse the land that we live on, in which the World population is growing at alarming rates every day. And in my opinion, we are ignoring the warning signs that could bring Earth to a crashing halt. Sure, more in likely not when we are alive and probably not during the time that are children grow up. But maybe during the time of our children's children?

Yes, there are different sides to the story. There are cons and pros. We have scientists that agree with Global warming and many that are against it. This will never change. But why not read up on it yourself, you be the judge. I did at one time and this is what I came up with. What's happening to the land around us........ Overall, even if you don't think it is as bad as advertised, we all can do the little things that will help in the long run.

Conclusion :  What's interesting is that Google apparently has a good understanding of this and decided to change their logo for the time being. I wonder how long it will stay up this way. Just 1 day?  3 days?  For exactly one week?  What do you think?  Do you think this is good marketing?

I saw the logo earlier. Google always knows how to make a statement with its very simply search page and logo. I usually see them change it for the day when they do.

I was amazed when I saw this logo.  Actually, I was unaware they ever changed it for a particular event -- I do think people should become informed about environmental matters -- the worst thing is just to remain uninformed.  Personally, I think the more we are kind to the earth and the world, the better off the world is for everyone to enjoy.

Never saw that before thanks for pointing it out. I was once told that the good book says something to the fact that we as a people should "fill the ends of the earth". So if this is fact then we as people should be careful as to how we treat the earth we fill with people.

My biggest fear is what they are doing to the rain forests in South America. We need the trees for oxygen.

Jeff,

We personally believe it and do our best to do all the things that are recommended to preserve the environment or what is left of it.  Thanks for posting this because keeping people reminded as often as possible is important in the scheme of things.  We like the marketing stand Google has taken!

Jeff,

I think Yahoo does the same thing as Google.

Global warming? I'm not a scientist but I guess if we stop using aerosol it is better.

Hi Jeff Belonger~ This is interesting...I think reality is finally starting to hit the mainstream thinking process and its about time...its a very thing for our children to have to face...its cool that Google did that. Just a visual cue like that can go a long way!

If Google did it...it must be the right thing to do!  Seems like anything they do or touch these days has them seeing more and more green!!

Shekeria..... yes, it's amazing. Not only do they have simple search pages and a simple logo, but creative at times. and their logo seems to reach out on important issues at times.

Joan... I am glad that I could bring this to your attention, Google's logo that is. In regards to the earth? My personal opinion is that so many of us just think of us.....  and not the future. Look at the spending habits, which is a great example.

Jay......  the rain forests have always been a problem that I can remember. Even going back to grade school in the middle and late 70's. People just don't pay attention to this and that it's not big news to report. That's even a larger issue at hand. The media, because this is boring news. Thanks for you feedback.

Lisa.... so, what's Robert's take on this.  ;o)  Just teasing.  Hey, I am not perfect, but I do think about this. Remember the old commercial with the Indian, that showed people littering? I have always stood by that at least. If I have trach to throw out, not matter what, stick it in my pocket until I find a trash can. Or at least hold onto it.

I guess we need to be reminded more often. Thanks for your comments.

Carole...... yes, it looks like it was up just for the day. Too bad they wouldn't keep it around for a few days, to see how many people would have noticed this. I was away all weekend and for most of the day yesterday. If I didn't take a peak online, I would have never noticed this.

Monika.... I'll do much better if Jay does my dishes also..  ;o)  Yes, I liked their logo also. It was very creative.

Neal......  I don't really pay attention to yahoo. Now, that would be interesting in regards to 2 issues. Who started being creative first in regards to their logo's. 2nd.... and if yahoo does this, is it to be competitive with Google?

And I thought you a were a scientist, a mad scientist.  Thanks for stopping by.

Gary...... thanks for the compliment and for your input

Laura..... Hi Laura Monroe....  ;o)   Is reality starting to hit the general public? I am not sure, just because Google changed their logo. I don't have kids, so I am not sure what is being taught in the schools and or at what age.

I do believe in visual marketing that can go a long way. I wonder if someone did a survey, if they would have recognized the logo and 2nd.... if they would have known what it stood for or it's purpose of the change.  ???

Fran.....  cute...  what other holidays do they change their logo for? I would be interested in that. I love creative marketing.

Ravi.....  not always. If Google jumped off the bridge, would you do it? Seriously though, we both seem to agree on this and the issue on hand.  But not everyone is going to agree with this issue and or even think that we need to change.  Thanks for your input though....

Jeff,

Looks like they only did it for the day... I did not see the new logo today.  I always enjoy seeing how they incorporate their logo into the holidays and such.  We can see another logo in a couple weeks (Mother's Day).  What do you think it will be this year?... Flowers?

I thought the melting iceberg was a little sarcastic myself...

they could have put globes or recycling logos there

dark humor sells though!

Jason.... it certainly looks that way. I never really payed attention to this until Christmas of 2006. So, will they change this for Mother's day?

David....  I thought the iceberg was creative.  The recycling logos sounds like a very creative idea also. Maybe you should call Mr. Google up. ;o)

Jeff,

I read a little bit on how Google changes its logo for different occasions. I've seen them change it for the Olympics, St. Patrick's day etc.

They pretty much broke the first law of branding - "Thou shalt not change your logo every so often" and have been doing well despite periodic changes.

Thanks,
Shailesh

Jeff,

I just did a quick google search on google logos.  I was shocked at what I found.  Apparently, they have been doing this since about 1999.  Here is the official google site that features all the holiday used logos: http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html  There is also a link on the page to fan created logos as well.

After looking at the logos... we can expect something for Mother's Day and most likely it will be with flowers.

Jeff - great post. I was helping my 10 yr. old with her science project yesterday and she noticed the change of Google logo. She asked why and I answered - "It's Earth Day, why do you think it's different?" She immediately came up with the answer that we have to take care of our planet to stop global warming. With Google and other major media outlets, I think the message is finally beginning to take hold, but hopefully we won't have to wait until my 10 yr. old is grown-up to make the changes.

Shailesh...... thanks for the input. Read right below you and what Jason mentioned. I am going to check out the link he provided now.

Jason.....  thanks for the link and for doing the research. As I stated above, I am going to check this out now. It's amazing how long that they have been doing this. Gee, I didn't even know Google was around that long. Either that or time has flown by so quickly.

Chrissy.....  thanks for the compliment.  It's amazing what kids pick up nowadays. I don't have any kids, but I have a nephew and niece that are both 7 1/2. I am amazed at how they listen and pick things up so quickly. And it's great that you daughter is aware of this. Thanks for your input and feedback.
