Manufacturing Trends
Despite what many would describe as “a World hell bent on outsourcing”, small manufacturing companies are still alive a well in Illinois. In fact there even appears to be an emerging trend of bringing certain types of processes and skills back into the US. Some companies cite that the level of complexity was too great for a ‘low cost operation’, others that the effort to manage products or process that have high rates of revisions was just not profitable.

The Changing Face of Outsourcing
Just in every facet of life, when the pendulum swings to hard in one direction, there will inevitably be a correction. Unfortunately large scale outsourcing over the last 10 years has significantly diluted the experience and skill base available to support those jobs opportunities that are returning to the USA. So what does this mean for manufacturing and technology companies in our area? Simply put….growth and growth opportunities for niche players who can provide the skills, services and technology to larger companies who still wish to remain “asset light” or “lean”.

An Analogy.
In many respects manufacturing is now experiencing the same things that the medical industry started to see several years ago. The number of Doctors on staff at the hospital is often a small fraction of the total number of Doctors who use the hospital and its facilities. Those other Doctors have their own primary medical office, usually in a remote condo office building, yet have medical privileges at one or more hospital to practice medicine and perform surgeries. Most of these condo offices are small and focus on very specific medical needs, through consultation. Others have specialized equipment for the diagnosis of conditions, or for rehabilitation. These offices are mushrooming…..in fact it is not uncommon now to see offices in strip malls that offer MRI and CT scans.

The analogy with the medical industry is intended to provide an example of how that industry has adapted to the needs of the “Big Hospitals” to outsource certain elements of patient care. For manufacturing the opportunity to use condo sites, small industrial units and other divisible spaces has never been greater. For those companies who’s product is a technology or service the opportunities to find real estate are even higher given the amount of office space that is available.
