pngOk I have to confess that I didn't want to do this me-me.  The trouble is that if it isn't real estate related - I tend to be reading science and to put what I was reading in proper context would be painful - for the reader.

But the me-me has been passed to me twice, first by Marie Meyer and then by Karen Rice.  But I decided to respond when I was reading something more "marketing oriented." The irony is that the book I was reading was using a science analogy on page 56.   So I guess I can't escape my former field for this one and stay honest!

The instructions were:

1. Pick up the nearest book.

2. Turn to page 56.

3. Find the fifth sentence and post the text of the next two to five sentences.

4. Don't dig for the favorite or coolest or most intellectual book.

5. Pass it on to five more people.

The book in question is Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die, by Chip Heath and Dan Heath.  I bought the book because I thought it would help me with my marketing.  In many ways, much of the content is proving more useful to more role as an adjunct prof. than for marketing..

"This analogy gives students a quick, compact insight into how the atom works.  The analogy also provides an insight into the reason that many people avoid compact schemas ('a supersized grapefruit') in favor of exhaustive description ('a citris fruit with a soft, thick rind, blah, blah, blah...'). The use of schemas can sometimes involve a slower route to the 'real truth.' For example, physicists now know that electrons don't orbit the nucleus the way that planets do. In reality, electrons move in 'probability clouds' So what do you tell a sixth grader?"

So now - who to tag.....

Lane Bailey - I hope he has a great car book around.

Jessica Beganski - I hope she has a dog book handy.

Sandy Fenton  -  Maybe she will have a local book on Westchester (unlike me.)

Karen Anne Stone - She may have some political satire or a well written book on the sorry state of our nation (unlike me.)

John MacArthur (aka J-Mac) - Hopefully he has something from the art world - since he is an artist...

Good morning Ruthmarie,

To take the last line, "In reality, electrons move in 'probability clouds' So what do you tell a sixth grader?", I would ask what do you tell someone that is not into science?  Thank you for sharing with the rest of us.

This looks like a good book and I should give it a read.

I'll have that post up tonight... and it won't be a car book, unless magazines count.  I might actually have to do it over a couple of times because of the odd books around here.

Thanks for the comment Don....

The "clouds" for p and sp hybrid orbitals  (the most common for organic elements)  look like "dumb bells."  The electrons move rapidly and can be at at any point with in that "dumb bell" space at any one time.  Whereas a planet belongs in any place in its orbit - however we can calculate the precise location at any given time and we can predict where it will be at any point in the future. The location is more predictable.

Cathy - it is a good book...for marketing AND teaching.

Thanks Lane.....I have to go to your blog to check it out.

Hi Ruthmarie,

I haven't posted my book meme.

I think there is a bit of science in marketing:-)  Along with vision and very importantly, execution.
